Jets’ Nikolaj Ehlers Takes Puck to the Face, Sets Up Islanders’ OT Winner (Video)
If you’re looking for one play to sum up the Winnipeg Jets’ season, this is it.
The Jets have the fourth-lowest point total in the NHL this year and 20 fewer points than the New York Islanders. On Thursday night they managed to take the playoff bound Islanders to overtime, only to suffer a painful loss. Literally.
Midway through the extra frame, Islanders center Frans Nielsen carried the puck into the zone and fired a shot on net. However, the puck deflected off the defender’s stick and hit Winnipeg’s Nikolaj Ehlers in the face.
At that point, the puck could have bounced anywhere. But because it’s the Jets, the puck bounced right onto the stick of Islanders forward Kyle Okposo, who fired it into the open net for the win.
Take a look:
The good news is that Ehlers didn’t appear to be seriously injured. The bad news is that, whether he gets back on the ice today or four weeks from now, the Jets are still going to be in last place in the Central Division.
