Own goals are bad enough on their own and certainly painful enough on an emotional level. But they get pretty painful on a physical level too when the kick slams off a member of the disgraced team’s face.

That’s what happened when Syria’s keeper tried to punch the ball out, only to hit Hamdi Al Masri in the face with the ball, which then bounced back into their own goal.

That put the Syrians down 1-0 to Japan in a World Cup qualifier. Japan won 3-0.
