Pablo Sandoval Benched: Loses Starting 3B Job to Travis Shaw

Pittsburgh Pirates v Boston Red Sox

Maybe it was the weight issues.  Maybe it was the fact that Travis Shaw has simply been the better third baseman this spring.  Whatever the case may be, the Boston Red Sox feel as though benching Pablo Sandoval gives them their best opportunity to win games.

After showing up to training camp looking like he was carrying a few extra pounds, Red Sox owner John Henry assured the media that the team was not concerned with Sandoval’s weight. But after the Kung-Fu Panda put together a .233/.267/.465 slash line in Grapefruit League play, manager John Ferrell had no choice but to go with Shaw, who batted .339/.381/.508 and offers the team a significant upgrade on defense.

When asked about his decision, Ferrell said, “The more we exposed Travis to third base, the defense became really a decision factor.”
