Leicester City’s magical season isn’t just the greatest underdog story of the year. It’s probably the greatest underdog story in the history of modern sports. Two years ago this team was playing the English soccer equivalent of triple-A ball. Today they are champions of the greatest soccer league in the world. This sort of thing should be impossible. In fact, it is impossible. So how did it happen?

Well, there are a number of factors involved, including everything from shrewd player signings based on advanced analytics to pure dumb luck. (Click here for an excellent breakdown in terms non-soccer experts can understand.) But one of the biggest factors was the coaching of Claudio Ranieri, who, as Fox Soccer’s Ryan Rosenblatt put it, “devised the Foxes’ system and tactics so perfectly for the team, often defending in long stretches, but locking opponents out of the center, utilizing Jamie Vardy’s incredible ability to run past and/or through anyone in his way, and creating space for Riyad Mahrez to cut in and make magic.”

Ranieri is hardly a soccer genius. He’s coached 14 different European club teams and never won a championship, and his last gig as manager of the Greek national team lasted just four games. But there’s no denying he did a brilliant job this year. And the crazy thing is, after the way last season ended for Leicester City, no one could have imagined that Claudio Ranieri would be coaching the team this year.

You see, last year Leicester City was in last place heading into the final stretch. Then they pulled off a miracle run winning seven of their last nine games, jumping up to 14th place and avoiding relegation to the lower league. And they did it under manager Nigel Pearson. So everybody assumed he would be the manager heading into the 2015-16 season. But then along came the Leicester City racist orgy sex tape.

Yep, you read that right. After the season, the team, which is owned by a Thai billionaire, went on a goodwill trip to Thailand. While there, three players recorded themselves having an orgy with some prostitutes, during which they used some racial slurs. When that recording got out, the team sacked all three players—one of whom was James Pearson, the coach’s son.

Not long afterward, Nigel Pearson was canned and Claudio Ranieri was hired.

So in other words, an embarrassing racist sex tape scandal led directly to the hiring of Ranieri and the most unlikely Premier League championship of all time.

This story just keeps getting better and better.
