Floyd Mayweather Says He’d Only Come Out of Retirement to Fight Conor McGregor (Video)
Earlier this month we noticed some pretty strong hints that Floyd Mayweather was making preparations for a comeback. Then, out of no where, he starting campaigning hard to fight UFC stud Conor McGregor.
Now Mayweather has made his position perfectly clear: he’s not coming out of retirement to fight anybody but McGregor.
The proclamation came in a lengthy interview Mayweather gave to ESNEWS over the weekend. You can watch the entire 12 minute video below. Or you can just read these excerpts.
Here are Mayweather’s thoughts on McGregor, The Money Team’s efforts to set up a fight and, of course, how much money he would stand to make:
“Every time he go out there and fight, when he kick ass, he kick ass in the standup position. So, if the fight does happen, which I truly believe is gonna be record breaking, I can’t overlook no one. I think in his last fight the guy was too heavy. But he gonna be okay. And we gonna have, I’m pretty sure we gonna have a master plan to make that fight happen. It hasn’t happened yet, but we locked down some dates. Me and my team…we locked down some dates, in different countries and different cities in the United States. And you already know what my number is. A hundred million. That’s just the guarantee! But we gonna talk about my number on the backend.”
And here is Mayweather’s “McGregor Only” guarantee:
“If I do fight, it’s only against Conor McGregor. That’s gonna be my only fight and not against nobody else because this matchup is just so intriguing. You have a fighter against an MMA fighter, one of the best MMA fighters to do combat and stand up and do it. He’s a strong fighter and when I look at him fight he’s a little faster than I thought he was so if the fight happens I can’t overlook the guy. I’m pretty sure – if we make the fight happen – I’m pretty sure he’s gonna push me to the limit.”
These are some pretty concrete statements from Mayweather. But of course they still mean absolutely nothing. He negotiated with Pacquiao for years before those two finally fought last spring. Just because he says he’s trying to make Mayweather-McGregor happen, that doesn’t mean its actually going to happen.
That said, if McGregor could make $50 million by getting his ass whooped by Mayweather, you have to think he’d at least consider it.
