When asked if he felt his star wideout Sammy Watkins was especially injury prone, Bills general manager Doug Whaley spoke about the dangerous nature of football, saying, “This is the game of football. Injuries are part of it. It’s a violent game that I personally don’t think humans are supposed to play.”

A strange statement from a man whose job it is to ensure that his team of men plays the game.

Whaley wasn’t speaking specifically about CTE when he made the statement, but it’s hard not to extrapolate the statement to include the recent head trauma studies that suggest long-term damage to players of all sorts.

In response to Watkins’ recovery, Whaley said he doesn’t expect the receiver to miss the regular season and said, “We trust in our medical staff and we trust in each individual athlete to do what they have to do to get back on the field.”
