Watch: NBA Finals Muhammad Ali Tribute Prior to Warriors-Cavs Game 2 (Video)
It’s always tricky when somebody of Muhammad Ali‘s stature passes away. On the one hand, the guy was the most important athlete of the 20th century, so it feels weird to hold a sporting event and not mention him at all. On the other hand, if you are going to mention him, you have to keep it simple and understated so it does not look like you are trying to make it all about you.
Fortunately, the NBA Finals Muhammad Ali tribute struck the perfect balance. Prior to Game 2 between the Warriors and Cavaliers on Sunday, with the house lights out, the PA announcer at Oracle Arena read a brief statement expressing condolences and explaining Ali’s cultural significance while images of the boxing legend and various NBA superstars flashed on the video board. Then the announcer called for a moment of silence, during which you could have heard a pin drop.
Take a look:
Hats off to the NBA for keeping it simple and classy. And hats off to Warriors fans for the most silent moment of silence we’ve heard in a long time.
