On Saturday night, MMAfighting.com’s Ariel Helwani, one of the most prominent and respected MMA reporters in the business, was kicked out of UFC 199 and given a lifetime ban.

Why? Because he had the audacity to report UFC news.

You see, Helwani reported that Brock Lesnar was in talks to return to the UFC and fight in UFC 200. But the UFC did not want that news reported yet. So they gave him the boot.

The UFC has always tried to keep reporters in line by threatening to blackball them. However, Helwani had always seemed to find a way to do his job well without pissing off UFC president Dana White. And that’s what makes this situation so strange.

Interestingly, a number of prominent UFC fighters have crossed party lines by tweeting their support for Helwani.

Hopefully the folks running the UFC come to their senses and rescind their ban on Helwani. If they don’t, they’re going to start getting a lot of negative press.
