Norther Ireland Fans Prove They Are the Best Fans at Euro 2016 with Brilliant Performance During Loss to Germany (Video)
Russia had the worst fans at Euro 2016, hands down. But who had the best? Well, it’s a bit of a toss-up.
Some folks would probably give the nod to Ireland fans, who went viral this week after serenading a French model with a rousing rendition of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You.” However, I’m inclined to go with the fans from Northern Ireland. Not only did they have the best chant of the tournament, but they remained steadfastly upbeat and optimistic in the most dire of circumstances.
Just take a look at this scene from Paris’ Parc des Princes on Tuesday. Germany beat Northern Ireland 1-0 in a game that was far more lopsided than the score suggests, but the Northern Ireland fans didn’t rip seats from the floor or throw flares onto the field. Instead, they just kept singing “Will Griggs’ On Fire!” the whole time:
They even kept going after the game was over:
What is “Will Griggs’ On Fire”? It’s a song about Northern Ireland striker Will Griggs set to the tune of a terrible 90s pop song called “Freed From Desire” by somebody called Gala. It was made up earlier this year by a fan of England’s third-tier Wiggan Athletic, where Will Griggs plays. And it was adopted by Northern Ireland fans at Euro 2016, despite the fact that Will Griggs didn’t see a single minute of action in their three games. Which is awesome.
The lyrics? Instead of “freed from desire, mind and senses purified” as in the original, fans sing “Will Griggs’ on fire, your defense is terrified.” Then they go, “oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh” for like five minutes, and repeat.
Fortunately, we’ll get at least one more chance to see the Northern Ireland fans do their thing at Euro 2016. With three points in the group stage, they’re one of the four third place teams that will advance to the knockout stage.
