On Sunday, Argentina met Chile in the finals of the South American soccer championship, the Copa America, and all eyes were on Lionel Messi and Argentina. Having reached the finals of two consecutive major international championships and lost—at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2015 Copa Amerca—this was viewed as a chance for Messi to exorcise his demons and cement his status as quite possibly the greatest soccer player of all time.

Unfortunately for Leo, it was not meant to be. For the second consecutive year, Argentina and Chile played to a 0-0 draw and had to settle things on penalty kicks. And for the second consecutive year, Argentina choked.

What made this loss even worse, though, was the fact that Messi himself was the biggest choker. After Argentine keeper Sergio Romero opened the PKs with a save on Chile’s Arturo Vidal, Messi stepped up and fired a shot five feet over the crossbar:

After Argentina went on to lose the shootout, and heartbroken Messi broke down right there on the field next to teammate Sergio Aguero:

Back in the locker room, Messi told a group of reporters that he was done playing for the Argentine national team:

“My thinking right now and thinking about it in the locker room, I’m done playing with the national team. I tried my hardest. It’s been four finals, and I was not able to win. I tried everything possible. It hurts me more than anyone, but it is evident that this is not for me. I want more than anyone to win a title with the national team, but unfortunately, it did not happen.”

Of course, Lionel Messi probably is not done playing for La Albiceleste. That was probably just his emotions talking.

What did Twitter think? Well, Messi has a lot of devoted fans, and many of them claimed to be heartbroken on his behalf:

But most people just wanted to mock him:

Keep your chin up, Leo. At least you’re still filthy rich…well, for now anyway.
