Northern Ireland Fans Bust Out “Will Grigg’s On Fire” One More Time at Homecoming Rally in Belfast (Video)
On Tuesday, the Northern Ireland soccer team returned home after a wildly successful (by their modest standards) performance at Euro 2016. To welcome them back, thousands of people came out for a huge homecoming reception in Belfast, where all 23 players were introduced by name.
Who got the biggest ovation? A guy who didn’t play a single minute in the competition, but who nevertheless was the star of the team thanks to the wildly popular song he inspired: Will Grigg.
If you haven’t heard about Will Grigg and his famous song, you’ve been missing out. The guy spent the past year playing for Wigan in the third tier of the English soccer system, scoring 20 goals and helping them earn a promotion to the second tier. At some point during the season, a Wigan fan came up with a song celebrating his team’s number one scorer. And that song, “Will Grigg’s On Fire,” was the rallying cry of Northern Ireland fans at Euro 2016…despite the fact that Grigg never got into a game.
Needless to say, when Grigg was introduced at the homecoming rally, fans busted out the world’s most famous soccer song one more time. Take a look:
Again, that’s for a guy who didn’t even play.
Hopefully Northern Ireland can defy the odds and qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. It would be pretty great to hear “Will Grigg’s On Fire” on the game’s biggest stage.
