Around 4 a.m. on Sunday morning, Jacksonville police responded to calls about a crash in the city’s Southside neighborhood and found a Chevy Impala sinking head-first in a retention pond. Inside that Impala was Jaguars running back Denard Robinson and a passenger, Marissa Staples. Both of them were asleep, and both initially refused to get out of the car when police advised them to do so, apparently unaware of their dangerous predicament.

According to the official police report, the driver’s side of the car was submerged when police arrived, so the officer approached the passenger side and knocked on the window:

“The driver (Denard Robinson) opened his eyes and then went back to sleep. I continued to knock on the window until the passenger Marissa Staples woke up and rolled the window down and said ‘what’s up.’ I explained that their vehicle was in a pond and that they needed to exit the vehicle. The passenger attempted to roll the window back up. I was able to reach in the vehicle and unlock the door so I could help the occupants exit the vehicle. The passenger refused to exit the vehicle and had to be pulled out of the car. The driver was passed out during this whole process. I was able to wake the driver but had to turn the vehicle off and remove his seatbelt. The driver thought he was on a road and did not want to exit the vehicle. I had to tell the driver multiple times his car was in a pond and was sinking so he needed to hurry up and get out. The driver tried about three times to open the driver’s door which was the side that was under water. I had to keep reminding the driver to climb out of the passenger side because his door was in the water.”

Once Robinson was safe back on dry land, another officer screened him for possible impairment but determined he was fine. The report did not say what tests the officer administered or how he arrived at his conclusion. I assume it went something like this:

Police officer: Are you impaired, sir?

Robinson: Nope.

Police officer: Are you sure?

Robinson: Yep.

Police officer: Pinky swear?

Robinson: Pinky swear.

Police officer: Okay he’s good to go.

Personally, I can buy asleep at the wheel as the cause of the accident. But how do you not wake up when cops are knocking on your window and telling you your car is in the middle of a pond and you’re going to drown if you don’t get the hell out?

That’s the story Robinson is sticking with, though:

He probably should have thrown in a line thanking the cops who saved him from drowning and decided not to arrest him for DUI. But we’ll give the guy a break here. He was probably still tired when he wrote that.
