Nike Unveils the Air Jordan XXXI, a Tribute to the Original Air Jordan I (Pics)
Go grab your sleeping bags and lawn chairs, sneakerheads. Nike has revealed the first images of the Air Jordan XXXI along with the shoe’s release date, and I suspect you’re probably going to want to start lining up now.
If you find yourself thinking the new kicks bear a striking resemblance to the iconic Air Jordan I with its red, black, and hint-of-white colorway, that’s no accident. Jordan brand was specifically trying to pay tribute to the shoe that changed the sneaker business as well as the entire fashion industry.
Of course, in typical Jordan fashion, the new kicks manage to pay tribute to the old while also breaking new ground. This is the first time the famous Nike swoosh has appeared on a pair of Jordans since the original Jordan I. Its therefore also the first time the swoosh has appeared next to the flying Jordan logo.
This is also the first time a Jordan sneaker has an upper made of flyweave and leather. Meanwhile, on the soles is the word “BANNED,” a reference to the fact that the original tricolor Jordan I violated the NBA’s uniform policy.
Here’s a closer look:
So when can you get yourself a pair of Jordan XXXI “BANNED” edition sneakers? They go on sale globally September 3 at select retail stores and on Jordan.com. Follow @Jumpman23 on Instagram or Twitter for more details.
