Oklahoma State Basketball Player Tyrek Coger Dies After Collapsing at Team Workout
Sad news out of Stillwater today. Tyrek Coger, an incoming member of the Oklahoma State men’s basketball team, has died after collapsing at a team workout. He was just 21.
Paramedics responded to a call about a man who had collapsed from heat exhaustion on the stairs at Boone Pickens Stadium at 5:04 p.m. on Thursday. The temperature in Stillwater was 99 degrees at 5 p.m. with heat index of 105. A spokesperson for Oklahoma State confirmed that Coger was pronounced dead at Stillwater Medical Center a little more than an hour later.
Coger had recently transferred to Oklahoma State from Cape Fear Community College in North Carolina. He had only been on campus since July 5.
Men’s basketball coach Brad Underwood mourned Coger’s passing in a press release issued by the university.
“Tyrek was excited to be at Oklahoma State and had such passion for the game and was looking forward to being an OSU Cowboy. Losing a member of the team is like losing a member of the family. But we know our loss pales in comparison to the pain his family is going through.”
While the 911 call cited heat exhaustion, at this point the actual cause of death is unknown. We’ll learn more in the days and weeks ahead.
Our hearts go out to Coger’s family, friends, and teammates.
