This Michael Phelps Death Stare Will Burn a Hole in Your Eternal Soul (Video)

Michael Phelps has 19 gold medals, more than anybody else in the history of the Olympics. But like any great competitor, it’s the one that got away that drives him.

Four years ago in London Phelps suffered a shocking upset, losing the 200m butterfly to South Africa’s Chad le Clos by 5/100ths of a second. Now he’s back, competing in the 2016 Summer Olympics at the ripe old age of 31. And judging by the scene prior to Monday night’s 200m butterfly semifinal, the number one thing on his mind is revenge.

In the typically serene prep room prior to the heat, Chad le Clos was dancing and shimmying and shadowboxing about two feet in front of Phelps’ face.

Phelps? He looked like he wanted to rip the 24-year-old’s head off and put it on a spike, much to the amusement of the NBC announcers.

Take a look:

Needless to say, the Michael Phelps death stare became an instant meme.

Of course, as you probably know, Phelps did not win his semifinal heat. He finished second. However, he did beat le Clos, setting up an epic showdown in the 200m butterfly final on Tuesday night.

Don’t miss it.
