Combat sports have always relied on trash talk and grudges to promote events. But the folks at the UFC have this down to a science. Before every big event they make the headline fighters go on an extensive publicity tour. And on every stop of these tour the fighters come out on stage and insult each other until, eventually, there’s a melee.

The UFC’s current trash talk champion is, of course, Conor McGregor. But coming in as a close second is Nate Diaz. So the publicity tour prior to their rematch at UFC 202 was one of the most vitriolic and entertaining ones we’ve ever seen.

Here’s the thing, though. Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz? They don’t actually hate each other.

Are they BFFs? Probably not. But at the end of the day they respect each other as fighters.

Case in point: McGregor’s comments to Diaz after UFC 202. Before they found out who had won, McGregor and Diaz embraced in the center of the Octagon, and McGregor said, “Great fight brother. Great fucking fight. You’re a Mexican warrior. You’re a little Mexican warrior brother.”

At the end of the day, even UFC fighters are good sports.
