Dana White Declares Ronda Rousey ‘By Far’ a Bigger Star Than Conor McGregor
Maybe it’s sour grapes from when Conor McGregor dropped off a UFC ticket (then quickly retired before un-retiring) this summer, or maybe Ronda Rousey‘s just got more appeal.
Either way, just days after Conor McGregor was signed up for UFC 205, Dana White went on New York’s Hot 97 radio to promote the fight and he was asked if he thought Rousey was a bigger star than McGregor.
As usual, he answered the question in straightforward fashion:
“By far. Not even close. By far the biggest star. Ronda Rousey is such a big star. When you go down to Brazil, they don’t care who you are. They want the Brazilian to whup your ass. When Ronda went down there, they cheered for Ronda over the Brazilian. Never seen that before in my life, and will probably never see it again. That’s how big Ronda Rousey is.”
While it’s easy to see where he’s coming from with bad blood between him and McGregor, the numbers might not quite back White up on this one. UFC 195 between McGregor and Diaz was the second-highest-grossing fight ever, and UFC 202 in August featuring McGregor-Diaz II was the third highest-grossing.
Of course, in that time, Rousey’s been sidelined with an injury stemming from her loss to Holly Holm, but she should be back to shake things up by the end of the year, which will no doubt reignite the debate.
