After Getting Torched By Julio Jones, Panthers Cut CB Bene Benwikere
After star cornerback Josh Norman left to sign with the Washington Redskins this past offseason, he left his former team with a message for the upcoming season.
“It sucks it had to come down to this when I didn’t know anything about it. Hey, man, I gave it my all. We’ll see this year how it plays out for them. Good luck with Julio [Jones] and all the big twin towers [Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans] over there in Tampa Bay.”
Last Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, the Panthers had zero fun trying to cover Julio Jones as he burned cornerback Bene Benwikere for 12 catches and 300 receiving yards—all to the delight of Norman, who was informed of what happened following his team’s win over the Browns
Pro Football Focus attributed eight of Jones’ catches to plays in which Benwikere was in coverage—accounting for 228 yards and his touchdown. On Friday, the Panthers decided to part ways with their top cornerback.
Whoa. The #Panthers just cut starting CB Bene’ Benwikere, source said. Rough day vs. Julio, but had INT in opener, had played some good ball
