One of two remaining college tiger mascots died yesterday when Mike VI, the tiger at LSU, succumbed to a four-month cancer battle last night. Mike was euthanized in the college’s night house after being moved to hospice when he was too weak to remain outside. The tiger was 11 years old.

LSU has issued this tweet commemorating their mascot, and lots of online support has poured in recently.

Of course, the animal’s death is also sparking dialogue about the humanity of keeping an animal in captivity as a mascot as well. However, the only other living tiger mascot lives off-campus, but the school has apparently already begun their search for animal rescue centers for a Mike VII.
