Luke Walton to D’Angelo Russell: You Go High Five Your Teammates Right Now Young Man (Video)

As you may recall, Los Angeles Lakers point guard D’Angelo Russell caused a wee bit of controversy during his rookie season by recording and accidentally leaking a video in which teammate Nick Young confessed to cheating on his fiancée, Iggy Azalea. Ever since then he’s had trouble fitting in with his teammates, who’ve wanted nothing to do with the kid in private and out on the court.

Fortunately, the Lakers hired Luke Walton to be their new head coach during the offseason, and he’s doing a fantastic job of helping the team move past that unfortunate incident.

Case in point? This scene from Tuesday night’s win over the Nets.

D’Angelo Russell erupted for 12 points in the first 13 minutes of the game, forcing the Nets to call a timeout to regroup. The kid should have been all pumped up and full of himself. Instead, because he’s grown accustomed to being left out of celebrations, Russell just walked straight to the bench to sit down by himself when the refs blew the whistle.

Walton wasn’t having it, though. He caught D-Russ before he sat down and told him to get back out there and high-five his teammates. Which he did.

Take a look:

You know how sportswriters talk about the importance of instilling a winning culture? Well, that’s the kind of thing they’re talking about.

These young Lakers are in good hands.
