In his first two seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, Nick Young was a contender for the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year Award, averaging 16.1 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. However, last season Young played terribly, averaging just 7.3 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 0.6 assists per game. As a result, his average win shares (WS) dropped from 1.8 to 0.1, while his player efficiency rating (PER) plummeted from 15.4 to 9.1.

Fortunately, this season Nick Young’s numbers are all up again. He’s currently averaging 14.3 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. And on Tuesday night he hit the three-point dagger that gave the Lakers a 111-109 win over Russell Westrbook and the Oklahoma City Thunder.

So what’s behind his recent resurgence? According to Twitter—the ultimate source on such matters—Young’s game declined when he got engaged to Australian rapper Iggy Azalea, and it came back when she dumped him. Ergo D’Angelo Russell, the guy who inadvertently ratted Young out for cheating on Iggy, is actually responsible for saving Nick Young’s career.

Take a look:

Sorry Iggy, you can’t argue with this. It’s science.
