Report: Chargers Will Exercise Option to Relocate to Los Angeles
Joe McKnight Killer, Identified as 54-Year-Old Ronald Gasser, Released from Police Custody (Pic)
Police in Louisiana have identified the man who killed former NFL running back Joe McKnight as a white 54-year-old male named Ronald Gasser.
McKnight, 28, was a former standout at USC who last played in with the NFL’s New York Jets in 2014. He was shot to death in a New Orleans suburb on Thursday afternoon in what police are investigating as a “road rage incident.”
A spokesperson for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Department said Gasser remained at the scene of the shooting and handed his gun over to police when they arrived. He was then taken into custody and questioned about why he shot McKnight, but according to TMZ he was not formally arrested. Gasser was subsequently released from police custody overnight without charges.
This is a pretty shocking development. Police say McKnight did not own a gun, nor did they find a gun outside his vehicle. Meanwhile, a witness who spoke to the Times-Picayune described an execution-style shooting:
A witness, who declined to give her name, said she saw a man at the intersection yelling at McKnight, who was trying to apologize. The man shot McKnight more than once, the witness said. She said he shot McKnight, stood over him and said, “I told you don’t you f— with me.” Then the man fired again, she said.
Police told TMZ Gasser “definitely” shot McKnight, but that there are “questions about the circumstances surrounding what led up to it.” They also said that while no charges have yet been filed, the case is still very much open and could be sent to a prosecutor or grand jury.
Pretty insane stuff. Hopefully police have a very good reason for not charging Gasser with murder.
