Division II Basketball Game Turns Into WWE Brawl—Yes, Somebody Got Hit with a Folding Chair (Video)
Last weekend a Division II basketball game between LeMoyne-Owen College and Lane College devolved into a WWE-style brawl involving both players and fans. And let me tell you, it was pure madness.
The game took place at LeMoyne-Owens in Memphis, Tennessee. Apparently tensions between the schools was so high that the brawl broke out in the first quarter after a player was tripped. In the video you can see one fan pick up a folding chair and hit a player over the head with it. You can also hear the P.A. announcer pleading with fans to stay off the court, to no avail.
Take a look:
Given the utter chaos, referees made the wise decision to suspend the game. At time of writing the official word is that the game will be made up at a later date. Though we shouldn’t be surprised if the game is eventually forfeited and both teams are handed an L.
The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced that they were investigating the brawl and working closely with the Memphis PD:
“Such behavior will not be tolerated in our league under any circumstances,” SIAC Commissioner Greg Moore said in a release. “As a consequence, and at the conclusion of our internal investigation, all responsible parties in connection with this incident shall be subject to the most severe sanctions authorized by the conference rules and bylaws.”
Stay classy, Division II basketball fans.
