MMA Fighter War Machine Convicted of 29 Counts in Sexual Assault Case Involving Ex-Girlfriend
Former mix martial arts fighter Jonathan Koppenhaver, better known as War Machine, has been convicted of 29 counts in the sexual assault and battery case involving his ex-girlfriend, porn actress Christy Mack.
Koppenhaver had been facing 34 charges after allegedly kidnapping and sexually assaulting Mack over several months in 2014, and for beating her and her male friend after he found them together in her bedroom.
On Monday a Las Vegas jury acquitted Koppenhaver on two counts of attempted murder, as well as three lesser chargers. However, they found him guilty of 29 other felonies, including kidnapping and sexual assault with a weapon, which could get him life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Neither Mack nor the other victim, Corey Thomas, were in the courtroom when the verdict was read. The Associated Press reports that Koppenhaver folded his arms across his chest as the verdicts were read, shaking his head ever so slightly when he heard “guilty” on the two most serious counts.
Prosecutors Jacqueline Bluth and Robert Stephens said they were happy with the verdict. Bluth gave a statement to the press, referring to Mack by her legal name, Christine Mackinday.
“I think what was important to Ms. Mackinday was that the jury believed her in regards to previous conduct that she never reported,” Bluth said. “What that says to domestic violence victims is that even if you don’t report it right away, a jury can still believe you.”
Mack, 24, spent eight hours testifying against Koppenhaver during the trial. She broke down in tears while describing how she was beaten and raped several times in the months leading up to the near-fatal attack on her and Thomas in August 2014.
Thomas testified that he had been dating Mack for two months when Koppenhaver found him in Mack’s bedroom and attacked him. He suffered a broken nose, dislocated shoulder, scrapes, bruises and bite marks.
When Koppenhaver was done with Thomas, he turned on Mack. The jury was shown photos of Mack with a broken nose, missing teeth, fractured eye socket, and leg injuries. She also suffered a lacerated liver.
Koppenhaver, who legally changed his name to War Machine, made his UFC debut in 2007 and had a record of 14-5. Since his arrest he’s been serving a one- to four-year sentence for violating his probation on a 2009 conviction for attempted battery of another woman.
