Lee O’Donnell Pulls Off First Ever Monster Truck Front Flip, and It’s Ridiculously Awesome (Video)
Veteran Monster Jam driver Lee O’Donnell won the 2017 Monster Jam World Finals Freestyle Championship in Las Vegas on Saturday after successfully landing the first ever monster truck front flip.
If you’re not a Monster Jam fan, you probably haven’t given much thought to what a monster truck front flip would look like. A back flip? Sure, that’s easy. You just drive a truck up an incline fast enough and it rotates in the air. Piece of cake. But a front flip? How the hell do you do that?
Well, O’Donnell did it by getting the truck up on its rear wheels, then gunning it so that the truck hits a steep incline with the front wheels still in the air. The impact on the rear wheels sends the truck into the air in a front spin, and it eventually lands on the front wheels to complete the stunt.
Of course, there are a lot of variables here. To pull this off, you’d have to get the truck at just the right angle, going just the right speed for just the right distance, or else the truck might land upside down.
Fortunately, on Saturday O’Donnell got everything just right. Take a look:

This wasn’t the first time a Monster Jam driver had attempted a front flip. Eleven-time Monster Jam champion Tom Meents tried it back in 2015 and came pretty close. However, he wasn’t able to stick the landing:
