Oilers’ Leon Draisaitl Spears Sharks Player in the Groin, Gets Ejected (Video)
The San Jose Sharks annihilated the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night. And unfortunately for Sharks center Chris Tierney, Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl decided to take all his frustration out on Tierney’s junk.
With just over six minutes left to play in the second and the Sharks up 5-0, Tierney, 22, went into the corner of the Oilers’ zone to battle for a loose puck. However, Draisaitl, 21, wasn’t all that interested in getting the puck. Instead, he basically let Tierney have it. Then, when Tierney fired the puck around behind the net to the far boards, Draisaitl speared him in the groin.
Play was stopped a few seconds later as Tierney dropped to his knees. Draisaitl was then handed a five-minute major and a game misconduct.
Take a look:
The Sharks scored on the ensuing power play to make it 6-0. They added another goal in the third period and held on for an easy 7-0 victory.
Tierney went to the locker room after getting speared but was eventually able to return to the bench.
After the game, Logan Couture called out Leon Draisaitl for his dirty play.
“I think it’s dangerous. Any time you spear a guy like that you’re intending to injure him,” Couture told reporters. “I don’t like those types of plays in this game, but the refs made a good call with throwing him out.”
If the NHL’s department of player safety agrees with Couture that there was an intent to injure, Draisaitl will be looking at a one- or two-game suspension. Stay tuned.
