World Series Hero Luis Gonzalez Saves Woman From Burning Car (Video)
Luis Gonzalez was already a hero to many after his walk-off single in Game 7 helped the Arizona Diamondbacks win the 2001 World Series.
Last week, the sports hero became a different kind of hero when he helped save a woman from a car fire following a head-on accident.
According to The Arizona Republic, Gonzalez and a couple of friends were driving in Paradise Valley around 5:30 pm on Friday when the car in front of them crossed the median and hit an oncoming vehicle head-on.
With one of the cars already in flames, Gonzalez and a friend rushed over to assist the woman in the vehicle that was struck, while his other friend called 9-1-1.
Via AZ Central:
“I was just trying to get the lady out of the car,” Gonzalez said. “She was a little dazed and groggy. I was like, ‘Open the door, open the door, the other car is on fire.’ I didn’t know if the car was going to blow up or something because I was seeing flames coming out of it.”
Cuffari said Mehan managed to open the door and Gonzalez pulled the woman from the vehicle and to safety.
“Gonzo pulled her out and held her the whole time,” Cuffari said. “She didn’t know what hit her.”
And here’s a Tweet from Gonzo’s friend, Artie Cuffari (the one who called 9-1-1):
