Michael Phelps Will Race a Great White Shark for ‘Shark Week’
If you need any evidence that the Discovery Channel has embraced its campy roots with the pop-culture staple Shark Week, look no further than the main event on this year’s docket. “Phelps vs. Shark: Great Gold vs. Great White,” will, as the name suggests, feature a race between 23-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps and a damn shark.
The logistics haven’t been revealed, but it’s a safe bet that the two will be separated, lest we witness an Olympic hero eaten by Jaws on television. Also, it will be interesting to see how the network makes the race competitive. I’m sure it will be engineered in a fashion similar to the McGregor-Mayweather fight.
The swimmer will also appear in “Shark School with Michael Phelps,” which will, yet again, feature the athlete swimming with sharks—possibly less terrifying ones—while debunking common myths about them.
Sounds like Shark Week is slowly becoming Phelps Week on the Discovery Channel.
Well, it beats having Ryan Lochte show up, doesn’t it?
