Internet Reacts to Nelson Cruz Taking a Photo With Umpire Joe West During All-Star Game (Pics + Tweets)
This year Major League Baseball finally put an end to the “this time it counts” era. For the first time since 2002, the outcome of the Midsummer Classic will not determine home field advantage for the World Series.
Apparently Seattle Mariners slugger Nelson Cruz took the change to mean players had carte blanche to have fun.
In the top of the sixth, Cruz brought his phone with him to the plate and had Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina take a photo of him and home plate umpire Joe West, who had recently umpired his 5,000th game.
After Yadi snapped the photo, Cruz put the phone back in his pocket, leaned in, and told West he wanted a photo of “the oldest guys in the game.”
Here’s what the bizarre scene looked like on TV:

No way that picture comes out, with the glare off Yadi’s gear.

Nelson Cruz should have gotten a phone call at the plate and not answered. The perfect tribute to Joe West: a missed call

If Nelson Cruz had immediately hit a home run after taking a selfie, it would’ve been the most legendary thing I’ve ever seen at a game.
