Welcome to the social media era, where anyone can and will be offended by everything.
Serena Williams is finding that out the hard way, after saying that giving birth to her child will make her a ‘real woman’. The 35-year-old tennis star, who is set to have her first child with fiance and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian next month, made fans go into a frenzy with her remarks during a recent interview with Australian newspaper The Herald Sun.
“I have so much respect for so many women [for giving birth],’ Williams said. “I am about to be a real woman now, you know? It’s going to be something incredibly impressive to go through.”
Later in that same interview, Williams also stated, “I definitely am a feminist. I like to stick up for women and women’s rights. So many things happen and I just think, ‘Wow, why don’t we have a chance?’ If that makes me a feminist, I am proud to be one.”
It didn’t matter, as fans, mostly women, couldn’t look past that first quote. They blasted her on social media.
