Raiders Coach Backs Sean Smith Following Assault: “He Was Defending His Sister”
Normally when you get arrested for felony assault, you’re not at work two days later. But this is the NFL.
After Raiders CB Sean Smith was picked up for the crime and released on $80,000 bond, his coach, Jack Del Rio, came to his side to support him.
Speaking to the SFGate, Del Rio said, “I think we’ll let him battle legally what issues he has. I don’t really have anything to add to it. I mean, I think you heard the story. He was defending his sister. Obviously, things occurred that were taken issue with, so he’s having to defend himself right now.”
The fact that Smith’s guaranteed $9.5 million this year might have something to do with the fact that the team was so quick to give him the benefit of the doubt in this matter.
I mean, they wouldn’t even sit him for a PRESEASON game? Yikes.
