Vegas Betting Trend Suggest Gamblers Think McGregor Will Get DQ’d
It’s been well-documented that Vegas sportsbooks have absolutely no idea how to handle the McGregor-Mayweather action. Mayweather should be the favorite by a much larger margin than he is, but the possibility of a fixed match or McGregor upset has them scared from going too heavy on the favorite–not to mention the fact that all the money is on McGregor right now (at an 18:1 rate according to William Hill).
And now, it seems like there’s another wrinkle in the betting patterns. A William Hill betting newsletter (via FTW) reads the following:
“The handle is insane. It is easily going to pass the handle for any fight ever booked in the state of Nevada. The liability is equally insane, as tickets are coming in on Conor McGregor at about an eighteen to one clip. The props are all drawing fantastic action with the most popular being will McGregor get disqualified. A lot of people believe that McGregor will get frustrated and eventually snap and do something Tyson like.” -Nick Bogdanovich, William Hill US, Director of Trading.
Well, that would certainly be interesting. Whether or not malice is a factor, McGregor’s got a pedigree in MMA, so it’s not impossible that instinct will kick in and he’ll grab, kick, or elbow Mayweather to get out of a hairy situation.
Basically, it seems like the fight is so lopsided that bettors are looking for some way—any way—to make this thing interesting. And if betting on a DQ does the trick, more power to ’em.
