Michael Jordan Speaks Out Against Trump’s Recent Criticism of NBA & NFL Athletes’ Decisions To Protest
You know it’s real when Michael Jordan decides to speak out.
Not known for being one to touch on social issues throughout his career, or even after it, the legendary Chicago Bulls star put his name on a long list of current owners to speak out against Donald Trump and his recent criticism of athletes.
On Sunday, His Airness released a statement:
“One of the fundamental rights this country is founded on was freedom of speech, and we have a long tradition of nonviolent, peaceful protest,” Jordan wrote in a statement, according to Rick Bonnell of The Charlotte Observer. “Those who exercise the right to peacefully express themselves should not be demonized or ostracized.
“At a time of increasing divisiveness and hate in this country, we should be looking for ways to work together and support each other and not create more division.
“I support Commissioner Adam Silver, the NBA, its players and all those who wish to exercise their right to free speech.”
On Friday, Trump unleashed a verbal attack that took aim at NFL players protesting. It called for owners to fire them for disrespecting the country, and he followed that up by withdrawing a White House invitation for the Golden State Warriors.
