Sure, we all assumed the world of horse racing was filled with all sorts of sketchy behavior taking place behind closed doors, but every once in a while, we get a reminder in the news. This time around that reminder comes in the form of Mike Mudaris, who’s been sidelined by California authorities after two of his horses tested positive for sildenafil, better known commercially as Viagra.

The results came in during 2016, but the punishment has just been made public via the Daily Racing Form.

Says the trainer’s lawyer to the outlet, “The board of stewards did not find Mudaris put any Viagra in the horses’ food or drink. It was allegedly done by his employees. He was not there at Del Mar that day.”

There’s no conclusive evidence that this drug would help the horses perform, and considering they both finished fifth in different races at the Del Mar event in question, it seems the trainer may have just been throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks.
