The award is given to an athlete who uses their platform to promote change, which is exactly what he did when he basically sacrificed his career to bring attention to police brutality and social injustices, all while donating $1 million of his own money to various charities across the country.
“I am proud to be able to present this to Colin for his passionate defense of social justice and civil rights for all people,” Lonnie Ali, Muhammad’s widow, said in a statement provided to the magazine.
“Like Muhammad, Colin is a man who stands on his convictions with confidence and courage, undaunted by the personal sacrifices he has had to make to have his message heard. And he has used his celebrity and philanthropy to the benefit of some of our most vulnerable community members.”
Kaepernick made headlines at the beginning of the 2016 NFL season when he refused to stand for the national anthem.
