Roethlisberger: Not ‘Fair’ To Punish JuJu Smith-Schuster Same As Rob Gronkowski
As soon as Juju Smith-Schuster delivered his punishing blow to the Vontaze Burfict on MNF and stood over him to add insult to injury, the likelihood of him getting suspended was pretty much set in stone. On Monday, he received a 1-game suspension for his actions and Ben Roethlisberger does not think it’s fair that he received the same type of suspension that Rob Gronkowski got and his incident was far worse.
Both JuJu and Gronk received one-game suspensions, but the difference in what each of them did were nowhere close to being the same as the Steelers WR was making a block and Gronk’s intentional hit came well after the whistle.
For that reason alone, Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger is calling foul.
“I don’t like to compare players and suspensions, things like that, but you look at what Gronk did and what Juju did, they got the same suspension,” Roethlisberger told reporters Wednesday. “I don’t know that that’s necessarily fair.”
Roethlisberger stated he believes JuJu should’ve been fined for the way he stood over the Bengals linebacker following the play, but did not think he should have been suspended.
“I didn’t think it was warranted,” he said. “I thought maybe a fine, pretty steep fine, something like that, but I thought the play that happened happened in the context of a football play, it wasn’t away from the ball, it wasn’t a hit on a kicker, a defenseless player, it was a guy getting ready to make a tackle, a much bigger football player.”
JuJu appealed his suspension after it was announced but it was ultimately upheld.
