Padres Edgar Gonzalez Nailed In Head By A Jason Hammel Pitch

Padres Edgar Gonzalez Nailed In Head By Jason Hammel PitchTotal Pro Sports - It is perhaps one of the scariest plays in baseball, comparing the dangerous comebacker.  It's the bean-ball gone bad.  Saturday night in San Diego, it went very bad in a game between the Rockies and the Padres.

Jason Hammel was wild all night, hitting two batters already in the game (Will Venable and Kyle Blanks), but it was his control issues in the 6th inning which would prove disastrous.  Edgar Gonzalez was at the plate, the bases were empty, and there was two outs in a 1-1 tie.  That's when Hammel's 93mph fastball missed high and wide.  Way wide!  Gonzalez would end up taking it off the helmet, knocking him down and out.

The Padres second baseman lay on the ground for quite some time as players of both teams and fans watched in silence.  He eventually sat up and was carted off the field.  Adrian Gonzalez, who also plays for the Padres, would end up leaving the game at the end of the sixth inning to be with his brother, Edgar.

Such incidents can only help remind us of the dangers involved in baseball, and how lucky we are that Erin Andrews only received a small bruise after taking a ball off the chin.  Gonzalez was released from the hospital on Sunday, but is experiencing concussion-like symptoms and will likely be placed on the disabled list Monday.

Here is a clip of the scary moment from Saturday night.

That was embarrassing, the guy was basically fine and made a massive meal out of his “injury”. He could and should have just walked off, its no surprise that he was released from hospital next day, they probably needed the bed for someone who was actually injured or ill in some way and not just embarrassed.

Honestly look at how cricketers react in the same situation of being hit on the head- a cricket ball will (and does) kill when it strikes an unprotected head, but its part of the game to aim at the batsman’s head and no cricketer in the world would have had the nerve to act like that guy after they were struck on helmet.

Totally lame, if I had not seen other American sports I would fear for a nation made up of pussies like Gonzalez and fans who call this “scary”. Also if he had kept his eye on the ball he could easily have avoided it, by looking away in fear he gave himself no chance of getting out of the way of the pitch.
