Why Isn’t Poker Considered A Sport

August 6, 2008

Daniel NegreanuI was reading this article a while back and have been meaning to write on this topic.  So after arriving in Scottsdale, Arizona and venturing out to the infamous Casino Arizona to play there 3-5 $150 game.  I over heard a bunch of young poker enthusiasts talking about "Why Isn't Poker Considered A Sport".   This instantly shot ideas in my head and reminded me, that I had to write on this topic.

Why Isn't Poker Considered A Sport; true there are many similarities in both, but lets be honest here I think poker should only be considered a game of skill.

Here are 10 reasons why poker should not be considered a sport!

  1. No poker player has ever been sidelined from an injury or failing any sort of drug test.  (This does not include Eskimo Clarks double heart attacks in the 2006 World Series Of Poker)
  2. Excessive celebration in sports results in an unsportsmanlike penalty, rather in poker you are given TV time.
  3. In sports most announcers were great players, rather in poker they are not.
  4. In sports using the F-word is perfectly fine and trash talking is a part of the game.  In poker you will be penalized for any of this.
  5. Not one poker player has successfully executed the infamous "Lambeau Leap"
  6. In sports you are cheered on by thousands of fans.  In poker you are cheered on by investors/backers, people whom you owe money and people who want to borrow money from you.
  7. In sports if you play poorly you are benched, sent to the minors, waived or traded.  In poker if you play poorly they tell you, you can come back as often as you like.  Especially in cash games.
  8. There is no crying in sports, but in poker everyone seems to cry when they lose a hand.
  9. In sports you endure physical stress on the body.  In poker the only physical stress you endure is out sitting your opponents at the table.
  10. In Sporting events the favorites usually win.  In poker the favorites rarely do.

This is why poker will never be considered a sport and only a game of skill!

Crazy Action online: Patrick Antonius wins a million!

July 23, 2008

Patrick Antonius Cash GameSome crazy action has been taking place online over at the high stakes tables on Full Tilt Poker.  It has been reported that Patrick "FinddaGrind" Antonius has won back to back days of over $500,000.  The sickest part of all this is that Antonius was stuck over $1,500,000 for the month of July.  That's not bad only stuck $500,000 for the month, some people don't even make that in a life time.

The biggest looser in the Online game has been Gus Hansen shooting away just over $1,000,000 in US currency.

In live games Tom "Durrr" Dwan has reported that he has lost $1,600,000 in live play, were guessing this has all taken place in Las Vegas, probably at the Bellagio in Bobbi's Room.

Here is the chat from Durrr while railing the online games at Full Tilt Poker:

durrrr: i lost 1.6m this week live
durrrr: =(
OnTheRize: i heard
OnTheRize: sick game
OnTheRize: too big for me
OnTheRize: srry man
durrrr: me2
durrrr: im hoping to run good online
durrrr: n get even by the end of july

Just writing this out gives me shivers, It's just so sick how these poker players can shoot so much money away.  If they can afford to loose this much, how much have they won and how big is their bankroll?

Anyone want to take my prop bet?

July 18, 2008

Gavin SmithWhile at the World Series Of Poker in Vegas this year, playing in event #49.  Fellow Canadian poker player "Gaving Smith" was making prop bets with one of the guys at my table.  One of the props they bet was; who would last the longest in the tournament getting 1-1 on their money for $1000?.  Well the guy at my table got knocked out first and he paid Gavin on the spot $1000 cash.

Online players Tom "Durr" Dwan bet Jeff Madsen bet on day 6 of the main event that he would not be able to knock down all the oversized beer bottles in one shot; call it "The human bowling ball!"

During at World Poker Tour Event this year Phil "The Unibomber" Laak bet Gavin Smith that he wouldn't be able to stuff 15 marshmellows in his mouth at one time and then seal his lips.  Gavin was up for the challenge and stuffed those marshmellows in his mouth like a seasoned pro.  Jennifer Tilly, Mark Newhouse, and Eric Seidel all had side bets on it.

Some of the sickest prop bets go on during the WSOP and the WPT events, last year Eli Elezra made over $1,000,000 in prop bets alone.  These players just don't bet $1000, im talking $50,000 props getting placed on a daily basis.

WSOP Main Event Final Table Ready For November!

July 17, 2008

WSOP FINAL TABLEFinally, the WSOP main event final table is ready for november 9th!  The nine remaining players have to wait a remarkable 117 days to play the final table.  This is a bonus for those players because they will all get big endorsement deals with many of the top poker sites.  Also, this will benefit the WSOP because they will be able to hype the table up in hopes of attracting more viewers.  The only thing that worries me is that the players will be able to study their opponents because of the long layoff, which i believe will ruin the excitement of the final table.  All in all, the pros overweigh the cons which will benefit the WSOP in the long run.

Here are the nine remaining players and their respective chip counts and seating positions.

  • Seat 1: Dennis Phillips - 26,295,000
  • Seat 2: Craig Marquis - 10,210,000
  • Seat 3: Ylon Schwartz - 12,525,000
  • Seat 4: Scott Montgomery - 19,690,000
  • Seat 5: Darus Suharto - 12,520,000
  • Seat 6: Chino Rheem - 10,230,000
  • Seat 7: Ivan Demidov - 24,400,000
  • Seat 8: Kelly Kim - 2,620,000
  • Seat 9: Peter Eastgate - 18,375,000

Don Cheadle playing poker 2-5 No Limit at Caesars

July 7, 2008

Don CheadleSitting in the Caesars Palace poker room playing 2-5 no limit Texas Holdem, the table seemed to be dry for about the first 2 hours.  I was getting no cards and found myself falling asleep every so often.  Until a Cannon sat down in seat number 10, and lightened up the table.  It was the infamous Don Cheadle; if you have never heard of him he has starred in such movies as Oceans 11 and Oceans 12.  Don was great to play with, really down to earth and joking every chance he had.  I was chirping him a bit, calling him a bully for raising my blinds.  He would say I got Aces then flip them over when everyone would fold.  The money didn't matter to him, when your making millions per movie what's a $700 buy-in.  Ship it!

Don was in town hosting the Ante Up for Africa tournament with Annie Duke held at the Rio, it was a $5000 buy-in that raises money for the Not On Our Watch (NOOW) project, the group founded by Cheadle, George Clooney, Matt Damon and Brad Pitt that focus' attention on stopping atrocities committed worldwide.

A lot of big names celebrities showed up for the event; Jason Kidd, Charles Barkley, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Adam Sandler, Ray Romano, Scott Ian, Kevin Pollack, Jason Alexander, Cheryl Hines, George Lopez, Joe Trohman, Doyle Brunson, Daniel Negreanu, Howard Lederer, Chris Ferguson, Andy Bloch, Phil Hellmuth, Phil Laak, Erik Seidel, Phil Gordon, Rafe Furst, Barry Greenstein and others.

The winner of the tourney was Johnny "World" Hennigan he won $136,860 and donated all of his winnings back to the charity.
