J.C. Romero Suspended For 50 Games
January 6, 2009
Total Pro Sports - J.C. Romero today was booked for a banned nutritional supplement's and suspended 50 games by Major League Baseball. The 33 year old relief pitcher said he bought the nutritional supplement from a GNC store in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
Supposedly the MLB Players Association had told players the supplement that Romero was going to use was acceptable, but now the Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher will receive a suspension and lose approximately $1.25 million.
"I still cannot see where I did something wrong," Romero said. "There is nothing that should take away from the rings of my teammates. I didn't cheat. I tried to follow the rules."
This is not the first time JC Romero has tested positive for a banned substance, in 2006, he tested positive for testosterone. The case was dropped on Nov. 27, 2006.
$425 Million Spent By The Yanks: What Would You Do?
December 28, 2008
Total Pro Sports - If you had $425 Million what would you do with it? We know how the New York Yankees would spend the money. They would pay players a lot of money and hopefully buy a World Series Championship.
This year the New York Yankees have signed 3 of the top free agents available on the market, CC Sabathia (7 years $161 million), AJ Burnett (5 years $85 million), and Mark Teixeira (8 years $170 million). Adding to their squad a growing list top paid players in the MLB. Are they done or will they continue to spend?
So what would we buy with $425 million?
- Purchase a 7300 square-foot mansion sitting on 6 acres in Scottsdale, Arizona - $5 Million.
- Purchase a 2006 Learjet 60SE - $10 million.
- Purchase a 2 story 6800 square-foot condo in Las Vegas at the Turnberry Towers - $5.75 million.
- Purchase a $16 million, 9,000 square-foot penthouse in Downtown Toronto.
Total -$36.75 Million
Mark Teixeira Signs With The Yankees
December 23, 2008
Total Pro Sports - Would you believe the New York Yankees have signed another top free agent this off season. After recently signing starting pitchers CC Sabathia and AJ Burnett to their All Star team, the Yankees have added to that team in singing First Base/DH Mark Teixeira.
Reports are that Mark Teixeira has signed on with the New York Yankees for 8 years at $170 million. They Yankees became interested in Teixeira when they heard that the Boston Red Sox were reportedly offering Mark a contract.
In 1 month the New York Yankees have dished out about $400 million in new contracts. Sabathia is set to receive $161 million, Burnett is set to receive $82.5 million and now Teixeira $170 million. The Yankees as a team have the 4 highest paid players in baseball; Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, CC Sabathia and now Mark Teixeira.
MLB What A Great League…Ya Right
December 23, 2008
Total Pro Sports - How embarrassing for baseball when a team has to pay a luxury tax in an amount that is greater than the lowest team payroll. The New York Yankees were hit with a luxury tax of $26.9 million today, a figure that exceeds the Florida Marlins team payroll of $21.8 million.
If we compare and contrast the highest paid and lowest paid franchises we notice some interesting facts. The New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers finished with a combined record of 163-164, the Tampa Bay Rays and Florida Marlins were 179-142. The Marlins top 3 batters combined for .279 average, 31 HR's and 85 RBI's while the Tigers big three combined for a .296 AVG, 27 HR's and 99 RBI's. It may seem like the big three for the Tigers dominated but let us take a look at the average in salary between these three players, the Tigers' three make on average between them just over $9 million. The Marlins big three make on average $500 Thousand, a figure that is $8.5 million less, for production that is not too much better.
Where Will The Rest Of Baseball’s Free Agents Land?
December 22, 2008
Total Pro Sports - So far the New York Yankees have flashed huge money at free agents, well over 200 million dollars to be exact, but don’t take that as proof that Baseball is safe from this economic recession we are going through. The Yankees may have shelled out that kind of outrageous money, but realize that their payroll is actually going down heading into 2009. Once Mark Teixeira signs look for players to have to settle for a lot less than what was first expected.
Let’s take a look at who’s still available, where they might sign and for how much.
Mark Teixeira, First Base - Teixeira has the best agent in the game in Scott Boras, but even he can’t get clients what they want in this economic time. He tried to bluff the Red Sox and it seems to have backfired. The Angels have stated they are out of the running because Owner Arte Moreno (easily the best owner in all of baseball) feels he’s being used by Boras to drive up Teixeira price. Teixeira has stated he wants to return closer to home on the east coast. This leaves the Orioles, Nationals and dark horse Yankees as teams in the running. Only the Yankees in that group offer a chance at winning in the near future other than the Red Sox.
Who he will sign with? New York Yankees or Boston Red Sox
The Yankees have to realize that if they sign Teixeira, it leaves the Red Sox with no other option on the market who will make a significant impact. The Sox will not sign Manny, who is the only other big power hitter on the market. If the Yankees were to sign Teixeira they would deal a serious blow to the Sox, and easily regain the pre-season edge in the AL East. On the other hand the Red Sox have to realize this as well, but the current economy might not allow them to make the final push to get this deal done.
What Money he will get? 7 years $160 Million, I don’t think he will get the 180-200 Million he desires.

Sabathia Needs A Signing Bonus!
December 19, 2008
Total Pro Sports - CC Sabathia's seven year contact worth $161 million with the New York Yankees, was not enough for the pitcher. The New York Yankees have reportedly given CC Sabathia a $9.5 million signing bonus. $6 million of that bonus will given to him now and the other $3.5 million at the beginning of next season. So realistically if he decides to hang them up right now, he will be $6 million richer without officially throwing even one pitch for the team.
It just boggles my mind at how these teams like the Yankees can find all this money to pay these top athletes and continue to generate a profit. I guess if you factor in the $188 million in gate receipts, cable TV rights to home games - $319 million, the $65.3 million in concessions last year along with all the licensing rights to the New York Yankees name. It's not a shock that the team can afford to have a payroll of over #210 million in 2008.
Beloved New York Strip Club ‘Scores’, Shutting Down
December 16, 2008
Total Pro Sports - The beloved Manhattan strip club, "Scores", will be shutting it's doors down at the end of the month. Scores opended it's doors in 1990 and grew into to a multi million dollar Strip Club Chain, with a total of 7 locations around the United States.
It was only fitting that Scores close its' doors for good. With the diminishing economy in the United States and losing their liquor license last month their was very little revenue coming in.
"Club owners blamed both the weak economy and the loss of a liquor license for the club's demise. (Apparently, a champagne room that serves just ginger ale doesn't cut it. Not to mention the fact that when you are sober you might think more about what your wife might say when she sees that $1,000 charge on your credit card.)"
Which Road Do The Jays Choose?
December 15, 2008
Total Pro Sports - The baseball winter meetings have come and gone. Carsten Charles Sabathia decided to accept the 7 year 161 million dollar contract from the New York Yankees, only a couple days after telling Dodger GM Ned Colletti that he wanted to play for them. If anything it shows how much pressure the Players Union puts on players to take the most money no matter what. Further proof is that Sabathia’s contract is worth 100,000 dollars more per year than the one Johan Santana signed last year, hence why that extra million is thrown into that contract.
AJ Burnett decided to sign with the Yankees. He signed a contract for 9 million dollars less then Carlos Zambrano’s contract, which is truly mind boggling. K-Rod signed with the New York Mets for only 4 million more than he was offered before his 62 record setting save season. This signing was more about being on the big stage of New York than anything.
A.J. Burnett Signs With The Yankees
December 12, 2008
Total Pro Sports - The New York Yankees are at it again! Trying to buy a World Series Championship, instead of doing it old school like the Tampa Rays developing from their draft picks and the farm team.
First it was C.C Sabathia and now it's former Toronto Blue Jay, A.J. Burnett. In one week the New York Yankees have spent over $240 million on 2 starting pitchers, and word on the street is that they are not even done yet with adding to their starting rotation.
The report is that Burnett has reached a preliminary agreement with the Yankees for 5 years and $82.5 million. Burnett is set to earn $16.5 million a year after basically producing one reasonable season his last year as a Jays. A.J. did the same thing when he was in his last year of his contract with the Marlins. He had an outstanding final year and then went on to sign a large lucrative deal with the Jays.
