In the wake of his Kardashian engagement/wedding/divorce, Kris Humphries has gone from NBA journeyman to household name, which just goes to show you that if you are blessed with only above-average and not superstar talents, you might want to consider dating or marrying a celebrity. They can boost your profile quicker and more predictably than any amount of gym time or hustle can, and they’re generally a lot hotter than a personal trainer or shooting coach.

9. Kris Humphries

Let’s get this guy out of the way. Before he was known (briefly) as Mr. Kris Kardashian, he was known as a 26 year-old who had logged time with the Jazz, Ratpors, Nets, and Mavericks. Unfortunately, his stint with Kim K. didn’t prove to be more fruitful than any of his NBA stops. Can someone please find this guy a team or woman that’s willing to really commit to this guy? He seems nice enough. Too nice for Kim, anyway.

8. Rick Fox

Now, for celeb-betrothed Laker, I had to debate between Lamar Odom and Fox. I went with Fox ultimately because he was always better known for being a generic “Laker,” a handsome guy, and singer Vanessa Williams’ husband from 1999 until rumors of his infidelity surfaced in 2004. Fox has made a nice post-basketball career for himself as an Actor having appeared in everything from One Tree Hill to Jake and Amir skits to Oz.

He was a member of three championship Laker teams, so to say he’s without talent is very dismissive, but he certainly got a big boost from his celeb wife.

7. Hank Basket

Who? Oh, that’s right. Kendra Wilkinson’s (The Girls Next Door) husband. This NFL journeyman receiver has logged time with Minnesota, Indianapolis, and Philly. While he showed a promising start in his rookie year, he never really got a chance to prove himself and is currently a free agent with no contract. However, he’s managed to pop up on the cultural radar after marrying Hugh Hefner’s ex, Kendra Wilkinson. He is a co-star of his wife’s reality show Kendra, which I’m presuming helps pay the bills without an NFL contract. Here’s to hoping he can quit reality TV and get back to football soon.

6. Anna Kournikova

Sure, she was famous well before commencing her 10-year relationship with pop singer Enrique Iglesias, but it’s safe to say that the boost his visibility gave her as a celebrity far outweighs whatever notoriety her talent afforded her. She was known as a mediocre tennis player that happened to be hot. Now she’s known as a mediocre hot tennis player with a very famous boyfriend.

Now, she’s making a name for herself as a Miami socialite, which is far less impressive than “pro tennis player.”

Also, I’m aware that having a female entry here doesn’t exactly jive with the title of the piece, but I hope no one will get too confused.

5. Mike Comrie

Comrie’s relationship with Hilary Duff has been much more noted than his stints with (deep breath): Edmonton, Philly, Phoenix, Ottawa, the Islanders, and Pittsburgh. While he was a hometown hero when drafted by Edmonton, he quickly lost favor after a mediocre training camp and public contract holdout.

Fortunately, his career with Duff has been markedly more successful, after getting married to the actress/singer in August 2010, and announcing the same day that they were expecting a baby.

4. Sean Avery

To be fair, Avery is known far more for being a complete a**hole than he is for either dating Elisha Cuthbert or playing hockey. Sure, he’s a tenacious pest to contend with on the ice, but the fact remains that when he called out Flames defenseman for dating his ex, it was clear that Avery was more concerned with reminding the public that he dated someone famous than he was for exercising discretion or class.

3. Eric Johnson

Who? Eric Johnson has been out of the NFL for a few years now, having played for the 49ers and Saints as a tight end, but he’s gotten way more attention from his engagement to singer/actress/fashion designer Jessica Simpson than he did from leading a shoddy 2002 Niners squad in receiving. He and Jessica just announced on October 31, 2011 that they are expecting their first child. Let’s hope he, Jess, and the kid for a better team than the mid-2000’s 49ers.

2. Mike Fisher

While Mike Fisher has experienced a fair amount of success on the ice (enough to merit a $4 million/year contract from the Senators before being traded to Nashville), he’s wrestled with some knee injuries in the recent past, which have kept him from realizing his potential on the ice. Off the ice, he’s overachieved by marrying country-pop star Carrie Underwood. However, an Ottawa radio station stopped playing her music after he was traded to Nashville. The station later apologized for the action, and Mike Fisher got to bask in a little more fame a little longer.

1. Jason Sehorn

As a Giants cornerback, the most notable play Sehorn ever took part in was proposing to his wife, actress Angie Harmon on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He was a standout d-back at USC, and was drafted in the second round in 1994. For years he gained notoriety as the only white cornerback in the NFL, however, in 1997, he blew out both his ACL and MCL, hampering his speed in future seasons.

Again, he’s known more for his hot wife and being handsome than he was for his NFL prowess, but that’s still the hallmark of a pretty sweet life.

The title of this piece probably sounds harsher than it is. Of course, everyone who appears here is an extraordinary athlete. But being an extraordinary athlete is not necessarily enough to give you a boost to international stardom, which is smack dab where all these ladies reside.

She’s never placed higher than 18th, and is currently hovering around 26th. That’s pretty good for you and me, but does anyone really know who the 18th (or 26th) best person at anything is? Maybe Tiger Woods on a bad day, but that’s about it. Still she’s only 24, which means she’s heading into the twilight of her career, but she’s still trending upwards. So let’s say she’s got five years of game left. Her looks could be with her a while longer, though.

If you don’t know who Biba Golic is, you might have to bear with me for a second. She’s a “professional” ping-pong player. (I’m not going to call it “table tennis,” and you can’t make me.) She’s been referred to as the “Anna Kournikova of table tennis,” which I’m sure is not meant to praise her abilities. She played at Texas Wesleyan on a table tennis scholarship, which I didn’t even know you could do, and my dad will be mad at me for not having pursued. She’s Croatian, she’s 33, and she’s really hot. Just enjoy the picture.

8. Anna Kournikova

No titles to her name, and her highest ranking was #8, though she did sit at #1 in doubles. Nothing to sneeze at, but surely not commensurate with her international superstardom. So let nothing I say diminish the fact that she is probably the most decorated pool player this green earth has ever seen. However, let nothing I say augment the fact that she is a female pool player that exists almost exclusively on Saturday afternoons on ESPN2. The fact that I know her is a “consequence” of her hotness. I will let you argue with me about her accomplishments and fame. I won’t let you argue with me about her hotness.

6. Ashley Harkleroad

She didn’t get to where she is because she has a sexy name, that’s for damn sure. She also probably didn’t get to where she is as a result of her tennis accomplishments, seeing as how her career-high ranking is #39. Gulbis has one LPGA win in 2007, and endorsement deals with RSM McGladrey, TaylorMade Golf, Adidas, Canon, Michelob Ultra, SkyCaddie, Payment Data Systems, MasterCard, Winn Golf Grips, Lake Las Vegas Resort and EA Sports. Now, some of these I get. I’m pretty sure I could hang out at my local pitch-and-putt for a week and weasel some kind of endorsement from TaylorMade. But Payment Data Systems? They decided they needed to enlist the help of a golfer that’s only cracked the top 10 in annual earnings once? And MasterCard thought the only cache associated with the winner of the 2007 Evian Masters would be able to bring to the table.

Those last two unanswered questions were rhetorical. And a little mean. Sorry, Nat. Keep on truckin’.

2. Ashley Force

Granted, I’ve got something of a blind spot when it comes to motorsports, but the fact that I’ve heard of Mrs. Ashley Force Hood should be a red flag in and of itself, especially considering she races funny cars. There is no reason that I should know a single funny car driver. I don’t even know what a funny car is. I can only assume it’s more humorous than a regular car. And probably faster than my Prius. Just kidding. I don’t own a Prius. I can’t stress that enough.

ANYWAY, Ashley notched a couple of victories, wound up second in the points standings, then took a hiatus during her pregnancy in 2011, but has appeared on the A&E TV show “Driving Force,” which I have never heard of, but does feature a delightful play on her maiden name. Tip o’ the hat, Ash.

For a stretch, Gabby Reece was the best beach female volleyball player in the world. However, considering I don’t know who the overall best volleyball player int eh world is today, it’s safe to say that when Gabby needed two qualifiers to take that title (“beach” and “female), she might have a had a little help in the looks department. She was anointed by Elle magazine one of the five most beautiful women in the world in 1989. While I think that may have been a little dramatic, she’s insanely hot and became a staple of MTV sports because the WBVL kill leader four years in a row.

Few things are better than a hot female sports fan. One of those things is a famous hot female sports fan. When the cameras scan the crowd, it’s normally just a bunch of dudes and unknown females. But every so often, you get autonomously devout practitioners. There exist a bunch of different reasons why they’re out there doing what they’re doing, but the easiest thing to do is just accept it and enjoy the scenery.

9. Kim Kardashian – Lakers

Sure, she’s the sister of a wife (Khloe) of a player (Lamar Odom), but the Kardashians have been a big name on the scene long before Lamar showed up. Further, it seems that Kim may actually enjoy the spotlight (more on this as it develops), so what better place to appear than a Laker game?

8. Elisha Cuthbert – LA Kings

This Canadian actress has hockey in her blood. And yes, she did for a while date Los Angeles King and douchebag extraordinaire Sean Avery. But that was actually because she was originally a fan, not the other way around. And one would have to be pretty devoted to date that guy. She is currently seeing Toronto Maple Leaf, Dion Phaneuf, but like any loyal fan, that hasn’t stopped her from cheering for the silver and black.

7. Katie Holmes – LA Galaxy

This one is probably due to the fact that her and her husband are friends with Posh and Becks, but since she’s not married or dating anyone on the team herself, she’s eligible. Granted, she’s not rocking the jersey, but if there’s a game in town, chances are you can find Holmes and Suri posting up, watching the match, even if Cruise is filming MI:4 or fighting Xenu or whatever.

6. Jennifer Love Hewitt – Celtics

I don’t know “why” a Los Angeles-based actress born in Waco, Texas, loves the Boston Celtics. What’s important is that she does. And she reps the team faithfully, flying her colors at many Celtic home games, despite living a daunting 3,000 miles away. Yeah, she looks pretty good doing it. Her favorite Celtic is Ray Allen, so Ray, if you’re not picking up the phone, you are doing yourself a disservice.

5. Hilary Swank – Lakers

Swank has been in Hollywood for 20 years and has long considered herself a big fan of sports in general, but there must be something more than that, cause she seems to appear at EVERY Laker game. She’s like the female Jack Nicholson, only not completely round. And, unlike Jack, she seems to enjoy herself at the games.

4. Anna Kournikova – Heat

She and Enrique live in Miami. Where did you think they lived, Cleveland? Together, this celebrity power couple can be seen at nearly every Heat game, sitting courtside and looking good. Now, I’m not sure if she’s attending because Enrique wants her there, or if she’s the bigger fan (I haven’t talked to her since we dated), but the fact is that she’s on the floor, cheering them on every game, so as long as she’s there as a fan, she’s on the list.

3. Keira Knightley – West Ham

After becoming an actress and moving to Los Angeles, Ms. Knightley was very concerned about where she could catch the West Ham games she had been watching since she was a little girl. Well, enter Sonny McLean’s, the Santa Monica sports bar that fills up for soccer games at 6 AM and stays full till the last one goes off. If she is stuck on the west coast, and not shooting a film, you can probably catch her there if West Ham is playing.

2. Eliza Dushku – Celtics

She has been seen dating Rick Fox, which doesn’t explain why she’s a Celtic fan instead of a Laker fan, so she’s still allowed on the list. No one on this list, except for maybe #1, reps their team’s colors as often, or as well. And unlike Kim K. and the like, Dushku seems to do it for no other reason than she loves the team. Hands down, the winner. No one has been more vocal in their support of a squad than Judd has for the Wildcats. Why? Well, she grew up in Lexington, then was Phi Beta Kappa at UK. However, as we listen to the death rattles of print media, Playboy’s iron grip has loosened and “lad mags” like Maxim and FHM have gotten their foot in the door, offering hot girls aimed at a slightly younger reader. Finch’s appearance here should be no surprise to anyone who was watching TV or even had a pulse five years ago. She was the poster girl for the hot female athlete and the fact that she could pitch a perfect game while filing her nails allowed every outlet to play the “she’s not just another pretty face” card, which allowed them to show pics of her in a more athletic context than most. And of course, Sports Illustrated, being that bastion of integrity, saw that anyone who can chuck a softball that fast deserved a cover. I’m sure the fact that she’s smoking was just a coincidence.

10. Bia and Branca Feres – Synchronized Swimming

The fact that these girls aren’t as popular stateside as the Hilton sisters blows my mind. Hot, identical twin sisters that happen to be synchronized swimmers and Brazilian. If that’s not enough for you, then you must be the greediest person alive. In 2004 and 2005, the girls were part of an exchange program with a Seattle high school, the name of which should be officially changed to “the luckiest high school in the history of mankind.” It’s wordy, but apt.

Stacy Keibler, from “Dancing with the Stars” and WWE fame, has been one of the more active athlete-model-celebrities of the past five years. When a men’s magazine wants you to appear on the cover in a bikini, it’s sketchy. But when a fitness mag wants you on its cover in a bikini, it’s a testament to the hard work and healthy lifestyle that embodies your outlook on your athletic training. The end result is the same – you end up on a magazine cover in a bikini. If they’re able to shed the guilt this way, then more power to ‘em. So long as they keep showing off their bodies, the readers will find the media.
