So I guess it wouldn’t be too surprising to discover that he has a Napolean complex that leads him to overcompensate for his small stature by being extra aggressive. The only thing is, as we see in this video, the guy also likes to live vicariously through his little boy. That’s a bit more problematic, wouldn’t you say?

What you’re looking at here is a home video shot by Robinson himself of his son’s peewee football practice. The boys are running an angle tackling drill, and it’s little Nate Jr.’s turn to go.

On his first try, he’s too slow and misses the tackle. But, being the son of a famous NBA player, he gets to cut in line and go again right away. This time he clobbers the other kid running the drill with him. Then, just for shits and giggles, they put Nate Jr. back at the front of the line one more time so he pound that other kid again.

The adults, who I presume are the coaches, just think all this is hysterical. But I bet it’s not so funny for the kid whose dad isn’t an NBA player.

Some may think that when these little guys play football, the impact of their hits is nothing to be concerned about, but that was not the case here. Don’t believe me? Just listen to the sounds made at impact and the boy’s cry after he gets lit up in this contact drill.

With the ball carrier and defensive player lined up across from one another, the whistle blew and they both went charging full speed ahead. Unfortunately, their momentum was put to a screeching halt when they collided in a vicious helmet-to-helmet hit. Sorry buddy, but there are not yellow flags in practice. Just massive headaches.

We knew that this kind of contact could occur at the college and high school level, but who would have thought such little kids were capable of such big things?

There is only one way to learn how to tackle properly, and that is the hard way. Walk it off kid.

Total Pro Sports – Preseason NHL hockey is back and although many prefer to keep it in second gear during these exhibition games, some players don’t know anything other than fifth gear. One of those guys is Dion Phaneuf and last night Kyle Okposo found that out the hard way.

Just over five minutes into the second period, with the Islanders up 3-1 in Calgary, Okposo skated the puck through the neutral zone with his head down and the puck in his skates. That was when Phaneuf stepped up and laid one of his patented bruising open-ice hits.

Okposo remained on the ice as the Islander players raced to get their hands on Phaneuf. First there was Pascal Morency, who came roaring off the bench to get some revenge. Okposo remained motionless on the ice for several minutes as medical personnel and trainers from both teams attended to him. He was eventually immobilized onto a spinal board and taken off the ice. No medical update is currently available.

This hit brought back memories of Colton Teubert‘s thunderous check on Jordan Caron during this summer’s Canadian junior evaluation camp. Not only were they similar in brute force, but they both took place in a meaningless game. Expect the debate to ensue regarding whether such hits belong during preseason play. At the end of the day, when you get on the ice and jobs are on the line, expect the game to be played hard. Those who do not often find themselves receiving a painful reminder.

Total Pro Sports – There’s nothing like a big hit to remind us that football season is back. Look no further than Saturday afternoon’s battle between No. 13 Georgia and No. 9 Oklahoma State at The Boone for just that.

Although the big boys don’t kickoff until Thursday, there was nothing little about the play of the college kids, especially Georgia Bulldogs safety Reshad Jones. His thunderous hit on Cowboys’ receiver Justin Blackmon may be the best you will see all season (not including post-game one-punch knockouts, of course) .

With Oklahoma State up by seven just over five minutes into the fourth quarter, they found themselves in Bulldogs’ territory. Looking to double their lead, Zac Robinson tossed a deep ball over the middle for Blackmon, but Jones had other ideas. As Blackmon juggled the ball with one hand, Jones delivered a vicious shoulder to shoulder hit, sending him hard into the ground. Unfortunately the new emphasis on helmet-to-helmet hits have caused officials to become trigger-happy with their yellow flags and Georgia was penalized 15 yards.

It was clear that the good times for the Georgia offense are over with the passing of Matt Staford and Knowshon Moreno. Quarterback John Cox had little to show (again), but at least we can still look to their defense to provide some highlights.

The Cowboys would score on that drive and win the game 24-10, but it was Blackmon who was clearly on the losing end of that hit. Luckily the result was not as bad as it could have been. Hits like that often leave men eating their diners through a straw.

So what does that mean for former first overall pick (and perhaps the biggest bust since Ryan Leaf), Alex Smith?

It looks like it will be another year on the bench for Smith, but while he failed to impress coaches with his arm, he may have turned some heads with his blocking.

During the 49ers preseason game against the Oakland Raiders this past weekend, Smith was unable to complete much, so when your QB can’t get anything going through the air, you team is forced to try something different in order to get the offense going. San Fran’s coach, Mike Singletary did just that, and must have been impressed with what he saw from Alex.

With the reverse taking form, Smith found himself out in front of the ball carrier, and like any good teammate, he was looking for something to block. That something came in the shape of a 6-6, 265 pound Greg Ellis.

Smith was clearly looking to prove something and win a starting spot on the roster as he laid out the Raiders’ large defensive end with a vicious hit. It may not have earned him the starting quarterback position, but don’t be surprised to see Smith making blocks for running back Frank Gore as the team’s new fullback.
