After enduring an embarrassing 45-3 defeat at the hands of the Patriots back in week 13, the Jets exacted some revenge on their division rivals by eliminating them from the playoffs following a 28-21 victory on Sunday. It was an inspired effort by Rex Ryan’s team, who simply couldn’t stop themselves from “flipping out” after the final whistle blew.

Here are some of the celebratory acrobatics put on display by Jets’ wide receiver Braylon Edwards.

And the win wasn’t the only source of vengeance being dished out by the Jets’ players on Sunday.

They were also able to send a message to Wes Welker, who had taken some cheap shots at Rex Ryan during a press conference earlier in the week. Welker was benched by coach Bill Belichick during the Patriots’ opening possession after making several foot references while speaking to the media on Thursday, and when the Pats’ wideout was inserted back into the game, he received some more punishment via this helmet jarring collision with Jets’ safety Eric Smith, which sent a piece of Welker’s helmet flying through the air.

Both teams came into this battle talking the talk, but only the Jets would leave Gillette Stadium walking the walk.

For those of you who have not yet heard, Braylon Edwards was pulled over by police and arrested on Manhattan’s West Side around 5 am Tuesday morning for drunken driving. A breath test showed that Edwards’ blood-alcohol level was twice the legal limit. And after seeing these pics of Edwards doubling up on his alcoholic beverages that night, twice the legal limit seems to make perfect sense.

Edwards is currently serving 18 months of probation for pleading no contest on a misdemeanor aggravated disorderly conduct charge after punching a friend of LeBron James outside a Cleveland nightclub last year. He is now being charged with driving while intoxicated and driving while impaired, and is due back in court on November 9. If convicted, he could face up to a year in jail.

These pictures certainly will not help his case.

The hope for the fans that fall into the now hairless category is that their team will be able to swing a big trade for a big name player. The truth of the mater is that there are about a dozen teams hoping to land such a player but there are only about half a dozen impact players that might move and about three teams that have the firepower and will to pull off such a transaction.

The first trade that isn’t going to happen is any trade for Anquan Boldin, and the reason is Roy Williams. Dallas gave up a first and a third round pick to acquire Williams from Detroit, and the NFL is a league of relative values. That being said, Arizona simply needs to point to the fact that Boldin has been more productive than Williams the past two seasons to turn down any offer for less than Detroit got. On top of that the teams that would be the most likely trade partner for Boldin (Giants, Ravens, Eagles, Titans) are teams that are known for building their teams through the draft and therefore value their draft picks and don’t trade them away very often.

The second trade that just isn’t going to happen is Julius Peppers to the Niners. This is one trade that seems to be picking up steam around the rumor mill, though it appears to be one of those rumors that is picking up momentum all its own. As far as I can tell the rumor is not based off of anything that Mike Singletary or Scot McCloughan has said but instead it makes sense to the analysts writing the articles so they say there is a high chance of it happening. The reason this isn’t going to happen is because it goes opposite of the direction Singletary has been taking this team, I just don’t see him taking a player that is that expensive and at the age of 29 already has a reputation for complaining.

What I had previously selected as my third trade that might happen I am now hearing just might! I was ready to say that at this point in the season Braylon Edwards better be prepared to re-new his lease on his downtown Cleveland apartment. However, I am hearing that since the Jets have realized that Mangini and the Browns are a pretty easy trade partner (Example: the Jets jumped to the number 5 pick after everyone said they wouldn’t be able to get ahead of 8th pick) they are wondering if they could get Edwards to strengthen their offense for relatively cheap as well. This is not a sure thing, its not even a deal that is in the discussion process, it seems the Jets like the group of young wideouts they have and are waiting to see if one of them can claim the number 2, namely the starting X receiver, but if none of them can, watch for the Jets to look into acquiring Edwards.
So many moves it makes me cry and we haven’t even drafted yet. Expect players to move on draft day – I’m looking at you Braylon Edwards, Jason Peters and Anquan Boldin – but here are some pre-draft grades for each team’s offseason activity so far.

NFC West

Arizona Cardinals

Free Agency: Upgrades along the line, a running back and a pass rush specialist were sought after, but none of these needs were really addressed. No one had more than 5 sacks in the regular season, and the distinct lack of 4-3 DEs on the market wasn’t fun for Arizone front office. In fact, they lost from their front 4 as Antonio Smith became a Texan, however he didn’t really perform until the playoffs. Mediocre play until the playoffs, isn’t that true for the whole Cardinal D? Warner re-signed, but if the Cardinals had managed to talk him out of the door then God save us all. Now do the same for Boldin.

Grade: C

Draft Needs: You get the feeling they were planning on raiding the draft for lineman and a RB anyway, but I don’t see a dominant pass rusher available at 31 or 63 without reaching. Moreno or Wells followed by the position versatile Jonathan Luigs in the second would be a dream for Cardinal management.

San Francisco 49ers

Free Agency: What year aren’t the 49ers looking for a top WR, a reliable QB and an effective pass rush? They responded by overpaying average talent at best; can we all agree ex-Titan Brandon Jones is a pretty lame receiver? How about QB Damon Huard? DE Demetric Evans helps against the run, but adds little pass rush in their 3-4.

Grade: C- – They’re waiting for the draft

Draft Needs: If they want Mark Sanchez they’ll have to trade up, and it’s worth considering that new coaching regimes – which this effectively is – tend towards a new QB. That said, Everette Brown would be the sack specialist they want and Michael Oher is an option at LT if Staley slides to the right. Singletary’s “I want winners” policy rules out Andre Smith.

Seattle Seahawks

Free Agency: That secondary went from dominant to horrible in one season, and no defensive backs have been added so far. It looks like Seattle have given up on the run completely, as they lost one of the top fullbacks in the league Leonard Weaver and offloaded a talented backup in Maurice Morris. San Diego did this 12 months ago and it killed LT’s season, so what will it do to a bad running back like Julius Jones? If they’re going to pass they need more targets, making Houshmandzadeh a jackpot signing. They also decided to trade Julian Peterson for Cory Redding and a 5th, but I don’t know about that. Seattle fans may taste the bitter flavour of regret next year for that move.

Grade: D – Mixed bag

Draft Needs: 2 picks in the top 4 – yes it’s still the NFC Worst. I debated this pick with TPS draft guru Chad Ellis and he’s set on Monroe, whilst I favour the playmaking ability of Michael Crabtree. It’s one or the other, but if you think Walter Jones can go another year I’m not spending the 4th pick on a player who’ll sit for a year. The best defensive back must be taken atop of the second; Sean Smith can play corner or safety.

St. Louis Rams

Free Agency: St. Louis hit the reset switch by cutting veterans Holt and Pace, which I actually like. You don’t ask the injury prone Marc Bulger to throw to inexperienced receivers in a brand new scheme all game, when you have a top 3 RB when healthy. They added a talented young center in Jason Brown and a top run blocker in Mike Karney at FB so look set to feed Steven Jackson the ball 25 times a game, a clever move from this organization. They preserved their secondary and held onto the exciting Ronald Bartell, but let’s be honest; the Rams still have holes all over the field.

Grade: B

Draft Needs: Left tackle with either Jason Smith or Eugene Monroe, end of discussion. After that they can go best available to fill the holes left in their side; aka every other position.

Jay Cutler

16 sides have elite and/or expensive starters already, Washington wants no part, Miami have ramped up the Henne talk to quell any Cutler rumors, whilst it’s unlikely the Broncos accept the injury prone Hasselbeck or Bulger in any sort of deal, and despite Chicago making a lot of noise when your QB situation is adequate and you have bigger needs to fill – why? Who would he throw to anyway? It’s the same situation in Buffalo.

The Jags, Browns and Eagles are in the maybe pile for me, but Jacksonville will focus on MJD next year meaning they’ll need to seriously upgrade that offensive line – they just don’t need a big name QB to throw to their non-existent receiving core. It’s a huge long shot but the Browns, Eagles and Broncos all have something the other wants: Philadelphia want Braylon Edwards, the Broncos want one of Philadelphia’s two first rounders and McNabb always seems ready to leave, whilst Cleveland head coach Eric Mangini doesn’t really fancy Quinn or Anderson. Some sort of three way deal involving the above is unlikely but remember: Eric Mangini and Josh McDaniels must have some sort of working relationship after their time in New England.

As far as the teams desperate for a QB I think you rule out Detroit and the Bucs; no way Cutler wants to fester in Detroit and in an unstable economy paying Aaron Curry number one overall pay is unattractive to Denver front office, Tampa select at 19 and don’t have a second rounder so may not be able to cough up enough for him. That leaves the Jets, Vikings and 49ers who I think pursue him in that order. Minnesota have been eerily quiet during this whole fiasco and I’m still mystified by the Sage Rosenfels deal; either he’s a very expensive backup (he cost them a fourth round pick), or he’s the favorite to start ahead of Tavaris Jackson – call them the wild card. San Francisco and New York fit the bill with draft picks under 20, and on paper Cutler would enjoy the prospect of playing for either. They’re definitely the two favorites but I have reserves for both of them; Brett Ratliff and Kellen Clemens have been told to fight it out, and would Mick Singletary see the perceived ‘whiny’ Cutler as a fit in his “I want winners!” offense? Wherever he does land it’s going to be blockbuster; we haven’t seen a QB of his age and talent traded in a long time.

Braylon Edwards

Rumor has it the Browns are shopping everyone apart from linebacker D’Qwell Jackson and left tackle Joe Thomas, and Edwards is at the front of the exit line. As the Browns went through 4 QBs Edwards fell off the map, so a year out from him hitting free agency the Browns want to cash in now. The Eagles and Giants lead the race, though Plaxico for Braylon straight up has been squashed in recent days. It’ll likely cost a team their second and I put the chance of him leaving at about 70% – the Titans, Rams, Bears and Jets would also be interested if his status is made official.

Tony Gonzalez

It sounds like Gonzalez wants out, whilst Pioli says no. He deserves a shot at the Super Bowl, but teams would be apprehensive to move for a player who seems to be on borrowed time and many expect the bottom to fall out on soon despite dominating 2008. The most Kansas gets is a second with the Packers sniffing around, but in all likelihood Gonzo probably remains a Chief.

Veteran Receivers

Tory Holt is getting a job as either a Jag or Jet, but it’s all quiet for Marvin Harrison. Harrison may have to wait until pre-season and hope an injury opens up a spot for him.

Julius Peppers

A week ago he was a lock for New England, but nothing official has materialized. He wants to play in the NFC and as a 3-4 linebacker, which makes New England, Dallas, Green Bay or San Francisco all options, but since Green Bay is notoriously conservative in free agency it’s likely a shootout between the Pats and ‘Boys – it’s worth noting that the Pats invited Jason Taylor to the Meadowlands this week, possibly putting the skids on any Peppers deal.

The Chain Gang

And finally; subject to suspension/reinstatement Plaxico Burress and the vaunted Mick Vick will at the very least have their rights up for grabs come pre-season. Chicago has tepidly expressed interest in Vick, but I think he makes a great fit for the Vikings. Two dominant runners in the field every down is very hard to matchup against and Bernard Berrian is a deep threat that Vick’s big arm could exploit, he could also feel out the year with a run first team who possesses a comparable backup. Plaxico is a red zone target, the sort the Eagles desire but given their NFC East status is unlikely, alternatively a short leash in Tennessee is a possibility – the Titans don’t suffer time wasters, ask Pacman Jones.

Total Pro Sports – According to the New York Post, the economic downswing the world is in right now is not affecting Reggie Bush and Kim Kardashian. On Saturday March 14th the two love birds were spotted parting in Miami, Florida at the Fontainebleau Hotel and making it rain like Marcus Spears did on his birthday.

“THE economy doesn’t seem to have taken a toll on Kim Kardashian’s bottom line. The amply rumped reality-show star (above) recently joined her boyfriend, New Orleans Saints running back Reggie Bush, at Liv in Miami’s Fontainebleau Hotel, where we hear Kim showered clubgoers with $3,000 in singles. Also in attendance were her sisters, Khloe and Kourtney.” [NewYorkPost]

But the truth was revealed at SportsByBrooks,

The party, not mentioned by the NYP, was to celebrate Braylon Edwards’ birthday. My source, who was in attendance, tells me that Bush and Kardashian and NFLer Al Harris did in fact throw money in the air during the evening, but that’s where the Post’s reporting goes awry.

The money, according to my source, was launched from inside a closely-guarded VIP area at the club – and was not aimed in the direction of clubgoers. Instead, the money landed inside the VIP area … and was quickly retrieved by Bush and Kardashian!

Maybe next time they should probably consider making it rain with Canadian Tire Money or even Monopoly Money if they are going pick up a measly $3000. Or just invite Marcus Spears or Pacman Jones they dont seem to care about the cash.

Who’s In

The opening week of free agency was huge, and $100 million men, blockbuster trades and big name cuts have already made this off season something a little special.

Washington has never been cautious with their money, and the down economy wasn’t enough to dampen their reckless spending as they made Albert Haynesworth a Redskin. 7th against the pass, 8th against the run, 28th in sacks – which stat is the odd one out? The Redskins couldn’t get to the quarterback in 08, and considering Haynesworth’s 8.5 sacks is a third of what the whole of Washington could manage the problem is solved; not only will Haynesworth cause chaos in the backfield, he’ll draw the double team and open holes for others. My only reserve with him is that after his big payday does he regress to Fat Albert mode?

Another team who problem solved quickly was the Miami Dolphins. Susceptible to the deep ball, the Dolphins needed to retain Yeremiah Bell or bolster their secondary another way – Miami chose both. Gibril Wilson was overpaid by the Raiders and became expensive collateral in a poorly managed side, but streamline the contract, refocus the player and Miami will have one of the top safeties in the game. Alongside the re-signed Bell, and hopefully a new corner in the draft, Miami could be building themselves a very tidy defence just a year removed from a 1 win season.

On the safety theme the Broncos signed hall of fame bound Brian Dawkins – huge news… 3 years ago. He’s a leader and can make plays at scrimmage for one of the worst run defences in the league, but he looked sluggish in coverage and is just plain old. Nobody knows what a ‘Ryan Torain’ is, but according to fantasy footballers and Denver Broncos’ fans he’s a good thing to have. And don’t you remember a year ago when Selvin Young got 1000 all purpose yards in 8 games? Or full back Peyton Hillis racking up 5 TDs in 4 games? Or Andre Hall, Tatum Bell, Michael Pittman? None of these names make Denver out to have a dominant runner, they may even look to Knowshon Moreno on draft day, but they are enough reason to make the signings of Correll Buckhalter and J.J. Arrington totally nonsensical. What are you doing Denver?

Last week I mentioned the Ravens badly needing corners – enter Domonique Foxworth. Leigh Booden will likely become a Patriot and the Jets stole Lito Sheppard for a 2009 5th rounder and conditional 2010 selection, making it a busy week for free agent defensive-backs.

New England signing Fred Taylor was a sideways move for me. They have the veteran change-of-pace back in Kevin Faulk and Taylor isn’t a workhorse number 1, so is the Patriots’ backfield going to be a Taylor, Faulk and Sammy Morris committee? I’m surprised they didn’t make a move for a pass catching back like Derrick Ward, who would fit their air first offence well. Elsewhere in the AFC East, Pats’ veteran Mike Vrabel joined the Chiefs for an undisclosed pick and Bart Scott finalized his expected move to the Jets. I’m interested to see Scott’s level of play outside of the dominant Raven unit. Higher? Lower? This is one of the more intriguing summer acquisitions.

In the ‘Hmm… Really?’ move of the week, the Vikings traded a fourth round pick for Houston’s Sage Rosenfels. Like Tavaris Jackson, lots of yards and lots of turnovers is Sage’s game; meaning we are still a long way from knowing the Vikings’ starting QB.

Finally, the Buccaneers traded a 2009 second and 2010 fifth for Kellen Winslow. The Browns like backup Martin Rucker and will make a move for a receiver in the draft so won’t be complaining, whilst the Bucs’ multiple 2 TE sets will mean Winslow fits in well. Smiles all round.

Who’s Out

The Bucs cut Galloway, Dunn, Brooks and June who may not be outstanding on field contributors but are still big names in a crappy economy who can sell jerseys, making at least attempting to restructure their contracts worthwhile. Restructuring a contract is something the Colts couldn’t do with Marvin Harrison, who abruptly left mid-week. Hopefully he re-signs, because you feel that Harrison in a Rams uniform would be an acrimonious end to a hall of fame career. Old and expensive Laveranues Coles also lost his job; he can be a solid number two somewhere but no more than that. Buffalo Bills anyone?

3 to Watch…

Braylon Edwards – re-sign the talented player coming off a weak season to a long term deal or trade him. They chose the latter for Winslow, but what about Edwards? Likely Browns’ number 1 wideout in a post Braylon world: Houshmandzadeh. Long shot: Kenny Britt.

Derrick Ward’s final destination. Likely: Buccaneers. Long shot: Eagles.

A week ago Kurt Warner was a lock to re-sign, but now…? Everyone expects the deal to still get done, but a stall in talks followed by a Warner walkout isn’t crazy. Likely outcome: Warner re-signs. Long shot: Warner rekindles the magic in St. Louis.

Here is a look at some wide receivers that will bring your team a fantasy football championship:

1. Randy Moss

Moss is one half of the best fantasy football combination in the league. He is coming off one of the best seasons for a wide receiver in the history of the NFL and should continue to produce monster numbers for the Pats. He should be the first WR off the board in most draft formats.

2. Terrell Owens

Dallas is going to have one of the best offenses in the league this year and T.O. will benefit from it by catching his fair share of touchdowns. Owens has long been considered one of the premier receivers in the league and even though he is getting older he continues to get open and make defenders look slow.

3. Reggie Wayne

As the uncertainty around the status of Marvin Harrison continues to grow Reggie Wayne looks to solidify his role as the Colts number 1 receiver. Wayne and Manning make up the second most potent combination in league and look to continue their solid play.

4. T.J. Houshmandzadeh

Chad Johnson is no longer the best receiver in Cincinnati and T.J. will prove once again this year why he is the man. He has been a favorite target of Carson Palmer as he has proved to be a great in the red zone. T.J. should be a welcomed player to any fantasy team as he continues to show that he is one of the top wide outs in the entire league.

5. Braylon Edwards

Edwards had a breakout season last year as he and Derek Anderson took the league by storm. Edwards is finally showing the NFL why he was a top 5 pick and he will look to continue his success this season. He should be a high pick in season formats and should go even higher in keeper league draft.

Honorable mention: Larry Fitzgerald, Marques Colston, Plaxico Burress
