Now that Movember 2011 has officially come to an end, I thought it would be a good time to take stock of the best charity mustaches from the world of pro sports. However, as I starting looking around, it became apparent that—just as with playoff beards—no other league can compete with the NHL when it comes to rocking awesome Movember lip hair. So my task quickly turned to assessing the best hockey mustaches form the past month.

Here are the results. They are pretty impressive, and I suspect they’ll be even better next year. So keep up the good work, guys.

After recording eight shutouts in 72 games last season, Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price had failed to blank the opposition in his first 15 starts this season. He finally put an end to that drought by giving the Carolina Hurricanes a drought of their own last night at the Bell Centre.

Price didn’t get much action in the opening period, as he faced only four shots from the Canes. But he would keep himself busy by getting in on the offense, recording an assist on Michael Cammalleri’s opening goal of the game. That would turn out to be the game-winner, as Price stopped all 25 shots directed his way during the Habs’ 4-0 victory.

With the win, the Canadiens moved above the .500-mark, which is quite the accomplishment considering they started the season with losses in seven of their first eight games. As for Price, his stellar performance should help him regain his confidence, and it earns him a spot on the “Stat Line of the Night” for Wednesday, November 16, 2011.

Montreal Canadiens center Tomas Plekanec didn’t have himself the greatest of nights in the faceoff circle during yesterday’s game against the Boston Bruins. In addition to winning only nine of the 20 draws he attempted, one of those wins just to happened to end up in the back of his own net.

Seeing as how Plekanec’s wining percentage in the faceoff circle is a respectable 53.8% this season, perhaps goaltender Carey Price should have been better prepared following Plekanec’s clean win against Patrice Bergeron in the first period. He wasn’t, and it resulted in the puck sliding under his stick and into the back of the net, giving the Bruins the 1-0 lead.

Luckily, both Price and Plekanec were able to make up for this blunder, as Price stopped all 29 shots the Bruins threw his way, while Plekanec scored the game-winning goal in the third, giving the Habs the 2-1 victory.

That should make it easier for both of them to laugh at the following video.

Price didn’t appear to have much left in his legs throughout the 65 minute game, which is exactly what you would expect from any man following a night with a stunning blond woman like the one he was seen holding hands with in the video below.

While Habs fans everywhere will be asking just who this mystery woman is, hopefully Price doesn’t have a girlfriend somewhere asking the same question, else the cut-throat media members in Montreal won’t be the only ones he’ll have to answer to following Saturday night’s performance.

Here is a look at what the CBC cameras captured prior to Saturday night’s game.

Before you begin to believe that Carey Price is as creepy as the mask he was wearing during yesterday’s NHL Heritage Classic, we should inform you that the design by artist David Arrigo, which featured the look of an old-school goalie mask with eyes on the top and a mouth on the bottom, was a tribute to legendary Canadiens’ goaltender Jacques Plante.

Unfortunately, Price couldn’t pull off some of that Jacques Plante magic, as his Canadiens fell to the Calgary Flames by a score of 4-0. I guess his mask was doing a better job of scaring away his own teammates from playing defense, rather than scaring away pucks and members of the opposition.

Hat Tip – [Puck Daddy]

You can catch the highlights from ten of those fighting majors (Carey Price vs. Tim Thomas, Travis Moen vs. Andrew Ference, Roman Hamrlik vs. Shawn Thornton, Jaroslav Spacek vs. Johnny Boychuk, and Tom Pyatt vs. Gregory Campbell) here. As for numbers 11 and 12, which involved the Canadiens’ Benoit Pouliot and the Bruins’ David Krejci, you can check that one out below.

Less than one week ago it was the Bruins and the Dallas Stars providing hockey fans with three fights and two goals within the opening 80 seconds of their game. As for last night’s meeting between the Bruins and the Montreal Canadiens, there may have been no scoring or fighting within the entire opening 13 minutes, but from that point on fans were treated to a total of 14 goals, two line-brawls and one goalie fight between Carey Price and Tim Thomas.

The rough stuff started 12 minutes into the second period, when a hit by Bruins’ forward Brad Marchand sparked a melee in the corner. Price and Thomas eventually squared off during that same stoppage in play, but their bout didn’t last long after Thomas went tumbling to the ice.

Tensions boiled over once again with only 49 seconds remaining in the game, as players from both teams on the ice exchanged punches. It all started when Travis Moen decided to send a message to Bruins’ defenseman Andrew Ference. That bout was followed up by several of the Bruins’ enforcers taking liberties on the much less experienced fighters from Montreal.

When it was all said and done, 12 fighting majors and 182 penalty minutes were handed out, making it clear that there is no love lost between these two division rivals. Here is a look at how things transpired during each of the game’s two separate brawls.

It appears as though we now have ourselves a turf-war between these two Eastern Conference foes. With the win the Penguins split the two-game series in Montreal this season. They will need to earn another victory against the Habs in Pittsburgh on March 12 in order to avoid being swept at home.

And if I know anything about gang wars, something tells me blood will be shed in that game.

And if that wasn’t enough, Price’s fame should only grow larger thanks to this parody of Kei$ha’s “Tik-Tok.”

After back-to-back disappointing performances from starting goalie Jaroslav Halak, the Montreal Canadiens turned to back-up Carey Price in an attempt to salvage their hopes of an upset over the top-seeded Washington Capitals. After a strong start to his NHL career, Price has fallen on hard times and has been targeted by the Montreal media for his partying habits during the season. This was his opportunity to erase all of those bad memories and make a statement that he the answer for the Habs between the pipes.

Unfortunately, things did not work out in such a storybook fashion for Carey. He was lit up for four goals, and his growing frustration became evident during the final minutes of the Canadiens 6-3 loss to the Caps in game four of their best-of-seven series.

Following Jason Chimera’s goal, which made it a 4-2 game, Price shot the puck at the Caps players as they celebrated in the corner. That would earn him a 2-minute unsportsmanlike penalty, but he was not done there. With only 11 seconds remaining in the game, and Price on the bench for an extra attacker, Nicklas Backstrom potted an empty net goal, and was treated to a two-handed slash from the Habs’ disgruntled keeper from the bench. Once again, Price received another 2-minute unsportsmanlike penalty.

So the frustration continues to mount for both Price and the Montreal fans. With the team down 3-1 in the series, they will once again have to decide whether another goalie change is necessary. When questioned about his actions, Price simply responded by saying, “It’s not a good move, but you let them know that your there.”

Good thing Carey took the opportunity this time to let the Caps know “he was there,” because he (and his Habs) likely wont “be there” for long.

Here’s an idea. Why not assert your presence by stopping some pucks next time?
