Unfortunately for Stoner, his plan didn’t work out all that well, as McLeod continued his jawing seconds after the bout. But it wasn’t all bad, as his willingness to go a round did earn him a spot on the “Frozen Fisticuffs Fight of the Night” for Thursday, February 2, 2012.

Both McLeod and Chipchura were able to land numerous shots during this exciting bout, making it difficult for us to pick a winner, but easy for us to award them both with a spot on the “Frozen Fisticuffs Fight of the Night” for Monday, January 16, 2012.

That fight took place during a game between the Vancouver Canucks and the Colorado Avalanche, as Victor Oreskovich and Shane O’Brien dropped the gloves between whistles in an attempt to settle their differences.

One fight may not seem like an exciting night of fisticuffs, but it does make our job easy, as we are left with the obvious decision to award Oreskovich and O’Brien with the “Frozen Fisticuffs Fight of the Night” for Tuesday, December 6, 2011.

Fortunately for McLeod, and unfortunately for Barch and the rest of us, the left hand of the Stars’ enforcer would catch nothing but air, leaving many of us wanting more.

We would get more, and while there would be no haymakers landed, these two combatants would do enough to earn themselves a spot on the “Frozen Fisticuffs Fight of the Night” for Monday, November 28, 2011.

With only a few minutes remaining in the opening period and the Colorado Avalanche already leading 1-0, Matt Duchene took a pass from Paul Stastny, dragged the puck through his legs and found the back of the net. It was a remarkable move that left Penguins defender Brooks Orpik and goaltender Marc-Andre Fluery in the dust and silenced the awe-struck crowd at the Consol Energy Center. Unfortunately, that beauty of a goal was all for not, as the Pens would score four goals in the third period and earn the 6-3 come-from-behind victory.

Despite the outcome of the game, Duchene’s goal should still be featured in highlight packages across North America and around the world today. It is something that needs to be seen over and over in order to be truly appreciated.

You can check it out as many times as you’d like in the video below.

With less than three minutes remaining in the third period, Cam Janssen and Ryan Reaves of the Blues, and David Koci and Cody McLeod of the Avalanche were in need of a dance partner, so they paired up accordingly and the exchange of punches ensued. I’m not quite sure this was a matter of “great minds thinking alike,” but in this case it was certainly “great” enough to earn them all a spot on our “Frozen Fisticuffs Fight of the Night” for Tuesday, April 5, 2011.

On a side note, watch the linesman work during this stoppage. For those who don’t know, the linesmen are the ones responsible for breaking up hockey fights, while the referees stand back and watch what goes on so that they can make a call on any additional penalties, if necessary. Both linesmen should also be present at the same fight so that they can tie up both fighters, rather than giving one player a free shot at the player they are restraining.

In this case, the linesmen begin at the Janssen fight, before realizing there is another bout taking place. Figuring most of Janssen’s fights last well over a minute, they attended to the other fight, while signaling to the referee watching Janssen vs. Koci to let them know if they are needed. After breaking up the bout between Reaves and McLeod, they quickly get back over to Janssen’s fight.

Check it out.

Fans at the Honda Center certainly got their money’s worth as they were treated to a five-point performance from Teemu Selanne, a 5-4 Ducks win, and the “Frozen Fisticuffs Fight of the Night” for Monday, March 28, 2011.

Here is another look at the battle between Parros and Koci.

If you take a trip to the National Hockey League’s official website, you will notice that they are currently holding a ballot which asks fans to vote for the player they feel is most worthy of the Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award. The voting takes place in a bracket-style tournament where players go head-to-head with each other until only one is left standing. The Anaheim Ducks’ Teemu Selanne was a part of this tournament, until he was eliminated in the first round by the Canucks’ Ryan Kessler. Had that match-up taken place following last night’s game between the Ducks and the Colorado Avalanche, Selanne likely would have lived to see another round.

What would lead me to believe such a thing? Anyone who watched the 40-year-old veteran defy Father Time with a five point effort during last night’s 5-4 victory knows exactly what I am talking about. With the Ducks walking a fine line between the playoffs and the golf course at this point in the season, wins couldn’t be more important, but following a first period that saw they go down 2-0, it appeared as though they were about to let two crucial points slip from their grasp. That was when Selanne came along and kick-started the comeback with a penalty shot goal early in the second, before completing the comeback, and his hat-trick, with a power-play goal late in the third.

With the win, the Ducks remain in seventh place, just one point behind the Nashville Predators for sixth, and four points clear of ninth-place Calgary. As for Selanne, he continues to put together one of the most remarkable seasons by a 4o-year-old ever, as he now has 75 points to go along with his “Stat Line of the Night” for Monday, March 28, 2011.
