After surrendering a goal early in the third period, the Columbus Blue Jackets found themselves trailing the Anaheim Ducks by a score of 6-2 last night. At that point, it seemed almost certain that the Jackets wouldn’t win the game, but they wanted to make sure that they didn’t lose the war as well.

Enter Jared Boll.

The Blue Jackets enforcer made sure his team sent a statement to the Ducks, as he beat up on Sheldon Brookbank one minute into the third period, and earned himself a spot on the “Frozen Fisticuffs Fight of the Night” for Sunday, January 8, 2012.

Frozen Fisticuffs Fight Of The Night — McGrattan vs. Boll — 11/19/11

There was plenty of action during Saturday night’s game between the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Nashville Predators, as overtime was needed in order for the Preds to record the 4-3 victory. However, despite all of the goals that were scored, perhaps the most entertaining part of the game came in the first minute, as these two division rivals provided us with two separate fights only seconds after the puck was dropped.

The first bout took place three seconds after the opening faceoff, as Jordin Tootoo and Derek Dorsett exchanged pleasantries. However, the fight that we are most interested in came one minute later, as Brian McGrattan and Jared Boll dropped the gloves and earned themselves a spot on the “Frozen Fisticuffs Fight off the Night” for Saturday, November 19, 2011.

This was McGrattan’s second straight “Fight of the Night” appearance. One look at the video below will have you agreeing that he was once again a very worthy recipient.

Sunday night’s game between the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Anaheim Ducks was a fight-filled affair, with four bouts taking place during the game. Two of those fights featured the same combatants, as the Ducks’ Sheldon Brookbank and the Jackets’ Derek Dorsett dropped the gloves twice, producing two equally entertaining exchanges.

One of these fights alone is easily enough to earn both of these men a spot on the “Frozen Fisticuffs Fight of the Night” for Sunday, October 30, 2011, while the combination of both fights has them pegged as early favorites for “Fighter of the Year” honors.

After recording 22 goals in each of his first two seasons in the NHL, there was plenty of buzz surrounding 22-year-old Jamie Benn heading into the 2011-12 season. Through the first six games of the season, the Dallas Stars’ forward has done a good job living up to that hype.

Benn has five points already this season. Among them is this incredible goal, which he scored following a brilliant individual effort that saw him beat four Columbus Blue Jacket players before depositing the puck over the glove of Steve Mason and into the net.

This is how you get your name on the ballot for “Goal of the Year.”

With only one fight taking place during yesterday’s slate of NHL games, we weren’t left with much of a choice for our “Frozen Fisticuffs Fight of the Night,” but that didn’t matter, as the one fight that did take place was quite the doozy. It was between Cody McLeod of the Colorado Avalanche and Derek Dorsett of the Columbus Blue Jackets, as these two combatants were engaged in a lengthy bout that saw several punched land before the linesmen could intervene.

It may have been the only fight of the night, but it was a good one, and it earns honors as our “Frozen Fisticuffs Fight of the Night” for Wednesday, October 12, 2011.

Let’s Watch Brendan Shanahan Lay Down The Law On James Wisniewski (Video)

After hiring him to replace Colin Campbell as the NHL’s head disciplinarian on June 1, 2011, Brendan Shanahan has yet to hold the position during the regular season, but he is already doing a band-up job.

Shanahan has been busy, handing out a total of five suspensions during the pre-season, which span a total of 19 pre-season games and 17 regular season games. In addition to handing out stiffer punishments to players for their reckless hits, Shanahan has also taken it upon himself to explain in detail why each offense is worthy of the punishment it received.

James Wisniewski of the Columbus Blue Jackets was the most recent offender to suffer the wrath of Shanahan’s iron fist. Here is a look at the NHL’s new head disciplinarian providing us with justification for Wisniewski’s 12 game suspension.

This Day In Sports History (March 16th) – Brittanie Cecil

It was on this day in 2002 that 13-year-old Brittanie Cecil was struck in the head by a puck while attending a Columbus Blue Jackets game at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. Brittanie would die two days later of a torn vertebral artery, which resulted in severe clotting and swelling of the brain.

It was the second period of a game between the Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets when Columbus forward Espen Knutsen fired a slap shot that was deflected by Flames defenseman Derek Morris. The puck was sent flying over the glass and would hit young Brittanie in the left temple.

This was the first fan fatality at an NHL game in the 85 year history of the league. The incident would result in the league implementing mandatory netting behind each goal at every arena prior to the start of the 2002-03 season.

Frozen Fisticuffs Fight Of The Night –Another Classic From Boll And Janssen — 3/7/11

The first time these two fought, it was 60 seconds of action. For an encore, the Blue Jackets Jared Boll and the Blues Cam Janssen added on an additional 40 seconds in what turned out to be 100 seconds of fist-flying mayhem. This was just one of the many events to take place during the first period of last night’s game between Columbus and St. Louis, which also included another fight and six goals (three for each team).

It is tough to pick a winner in this fight, so we’ll just say that the fans came out on top of this one. But Boll and Janssen wont go away empty handed, as they earn a spot on our “Frozen Fisticuffs Fight of the Night” for Monday, March 7, 2011.

Frozen Fisticuffs Fight Of The Night — Dorsett vs. Lovejoy — 2/8/11

Saved by the official. That was how Derek Dorsett must have felt following a fight with Ben Lovejoy last night. After delivering a flurry of punches to the face of the Penguins’ enforcer, Dorsett found himself with a jersey over his head. Unable to see, the Blue Jackets’ tough guy was about to endure a few punches of his own before the referees came in to break things up, preventing Lovejoy from administering some revenge for the earlier barrage he withstood.

Dorsett gets the win during this edition of the “Frozen Fisticuffs Fight of the Night,” but had this fight lasted a few more seconds, the outcome may have been different.

Pens’ Matt Cooke Drills Blue Jackets’ Fedor Tyutin From Behind (Video)

Following a dirty knee from the Penguins’ Matt Cooke on the Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin during the final minutes of Sunday afternoon’s game, Caps’ coach Bruce Boudreau had this to say:

“It’s Matt Cooke. Need we say more?” Boudreau said. “It’s not like it’s his first rodeo. He’s done it to everybody. And then he goes to the ref and says ‘What did I do?’ He knows what he did. There’s no doubt in my mind. He’s good at it.”

Fast forward to last night’s game between the Penguins and the Columbus Blue Jackets, where the Matt Cooke cheap-shot parade continued to roll on. This time he was busy taking out Blue Jackets’ defenseman Fedor Tyutin from behind before asking the referee, “What did I do?” That blatant act of disregard for the safety of an opposing player earned the Pens’ winger a 5-minute charging penalty to go along with a 5-minute fighting major after he was confronted by the Jackets’ Derick Brassard.

Somehow Tyutin was not injured on the play. Just as shocking is the fact that Cooke was not ejected from the game, but the Blue Jackets would have the last laugh as they beat the Penguins by a score of 4-1.

Cooke is set to face a disciplinary hearing from the league on Wednesday, and a history of dirty hits like this one could earn him a rather stiff penalty. With the Penguins already playing short-handed due to several injuries to key players, a suspension for Cooke would be quite significant. Although, I am still wondering how long it will be before the players of the league take it upon themselves to deliver their own form of punishment to Matt Cooke for his continued reckless abandon on the ice.
