While watching the first overtime of last night’s All-State Sugar Bowl between Michigan and Virginia Tech, I thought I had just witnessed the greatest catch of the 2011-12 NCAA Bowl season when Hokies wide receiver Danny Coale made a diving grab at the edge of the end zone, as he secured the ball in his arms before touching his left elbow down just inside the white line. That is what I, and many others, thought we had seen, however, the officials must have seen something different, as they robbed the senior of a possible game-winning catch.

Rather than being awarded the touchdown, Virginia Tech was forced to attempt a field-goal on fourth down, which they would miss. A few plays later, Michigan would line up and kick the game-winning field goal and capture the 2012 All-State Sugar Bowl by a score of 23-20.

So were the Hokies robbed by some poor officiating? I’d have to argue that they were. After all, I still can’t find any conclusive evidence to overturn the call on the field (which was a touchdown) during Coale’s diving catch. You can see it all for yourself in the video below.

Louganis suffered a concussion after hitting his head on the springboard while performing a reverse 2 1/2 pike during the preliminary round. However, the injury would not keep him out of the competition, as he would not only complete the preliminary round, but he would go on to attempt a similar dive in the finals, en route to the gold medal. It would be the third gold medal of his Olympic career, and he would earn a fourth in the 10-meter platform competition a few day later.

Louganis would finish his diving career with four Olympic gold medals, five World Championship gold medals, and six Pan-American Games gold medals, but the highlight that sticks in the minds of most of his fans came on September 19, 1988, when he hit his head on the diving board.

Here is a look at the incident.

Well, when facing that daunting task, the 26-year-old basketball star has some reservations.

The following video is from some kind of Nike-sponsored charity event at a pool in beautiful Barcelona, Spain. Apparently, as part of the evening’s entertainment, King James agreed to jump into the pool from the high dive platform. Only, when he actually got up there and looked down, the Miami Heat superstar froze. The next three minutes were filled with a couple of false starts, a guy on the PA saying a bunch of stuff in Spanish, and goading chants from the crowd—all of it totally awkward. Eventually, LeBron musters up enough courage to take the leap.

Obviously, LeBron is a human being and, therefore, susceptible to typical human phobias. Still, I must admit I found myself wondering if LeBron was really afraid of heights or if, like usual, he was just buckling under pressure. (Burn!)

In the Red corner we have Tampa Bay goaltender Dwayne Roloson, who made this incredible diving stick save after the puck deflected off the skate of his own defenseman during last night’s game against the Montreal Canadiens. The save helped keep the game scoreless with over five minutes remaining in the first period. Roloson and the Lightning would eventually lose the game 3-2 in a shootout.

And in the blue corner we have the goaltender from Williamsville North High School, who made this unbelievable diving stick save during the New York State semi-finals. With only 10 seconds remaining in the game and his team up by a goal, a member of the opposing team found himself with the puck on his stick and an empty net lying only inches away. It appeared as though he would send this game into overtime, until a diving stick save foiled that plan and preserved the win for Williamsville.

So which save is better? Upon first glance, what strikes me about both saves is the fact that they are not like your typical diving saves, where the goalie simply throws his body across the net and prays that the puck hits him. Instead, both goalies in this case were forced to find the puck and react accordingly, using some rather impressive hand-eye coordination to prevent the goal.

With that being said, I’m going to have to go with the high schooler’s save as a result of its magnitude. Roloson’s came with five minutes remaining in the first period of a shootout loss, whereas the Williamsville keeper made his with 10 seconds remaining in a 3-2 semi-final victory. It doesn’t get much better than that. At least not in my opinion.

So who ya got?

Hat Tip – High school save [Barstool Sports]

Okay, so perhaps you need a little more than that, as it seems like Mike Wilson and his crew had a plethora of interesting tools at their disposal.

I guess the proper equipment is necessary when you are swinging from a rope into a body of water 100 feet below. Unless, of course, you are looking to make things even more interesting. We’d advise against that. After all, this seems like the type of experience you would want to live to talk about.

Are you sick of all those soccer players diving around the pitch like the Chinese aquatics team? Ever wonder if there was something we could do in order to stop them? Well thanks to this Greek player, we may finally have an answer.

Just check out his reaction once he receives his second yellow card after the opposing player goes to the ground rather easily.

On second though, I’m not even sure I would call that a dive. After all, the tackle was made from behind and did not appear to come even close to the ball. As for the aftermath, I am still trying to figure out what is going on. The perpetrator goes nuts on the injured player from the opposing team, and it is his own players who want to fight him?

Aren’t the Greeks known for doing everything backwards? Or was it doing everything from behind? Either way, it seems to make sense in this case.

I’m not sure what to be more amazed about: The fact that this guy actually believed the diving board would support his fat ass properly, or the giant splash that was still created even though he simply spilled over into the pool. I can’t help but believe that if this GIF had been a few seconds longer, you would probably see a tidal wave take out those kids swimming in the far lanes.

Perhaps this kid is practicing for a trip off the edge of Niagara Falls. Or maybe he was just bored. Whatever the case may be, I think he has just helped us add to our list of hybrid sports. It may not be quite as extreme as some other others we have seen in the past (like show jumping and horse racing, or bobsledding and skateboarding), but kayak diving sure does look like a pain-free good time.

Sure, professional wrestlers may be good at faking, but they may have finally met their match. After all, when it comes to taking a dive, soccer players are second to none. Here is just another piece of evidence.

After seeing an opponent hit the deck like he had just been shot, this player decided to get in on the act and perform a little dive of his own. For those of you scoring at home, it shouldn’t be hard to judge this one. Good take-off, great air, and a smooth landing. Anything short of a 9.5 out of 10 is a crime.
