Why? Because Seattle Mariners’ pitcher Felix Hernandez was awarded the American League Cy Young with a record of just 13-12. His 13 wins are the fewest ever by a starting pitcher in a non-interrupted season to win the award. Hernandez bested David Price of the Rays and CC Sabathia of the Yankees by receiving 21 of the 28 first-place votes and 167 points in the Baseball Writers’ Association of America ballots. Just 24 years old, “King Felix” led the league in innings with 249 2/3, was second in strikeouts with 232 and shut down AL hitters to the lowest batting average allowed at just .212. His 2.27 ERA led all of MLB.

What’s also notable about Hernandez is that he did his best work against the top teams in the AL. He went 7-4 against playoff teams and dominated the powerful Yankees, going 3-0 while allowing just one run against and recording 31 strikeouts in 26 innings.

Congrats to Felix Hernandez, AL Cy Young winner. He has The Stat Line of the Night for 11/18/10.

King Felix threw 111 pitches last night and gave up only 4 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings of work. He also fanned 9 Indians during this impressive performance. Only twice did the Indians even get a man to 2nd base and neither was on any kind of hard hit ball, one being a fielder’s choice and the other on an error. Russell Branyan’s 2-run shot in the 6th inning for the M’s was really all the support Felix needed.

His 209 strikeouts are good for 1st in the American League, while his 2.30 ERA is good for 2nd. And yet due to his 11-10 record on this terrible team, he has unfortunately been overlooked for the Cy Young award even though he has been extremely dominant. For now he has earned the “Stat Line of the Night”, but he deserves a shot at the Cy Young.

Once again, the Mariners’ bats were quiet, providing Hernandez with only two runs, but that was all the righty needed as he shut the Oakland A’s out over eight solid innings of work. Of the 24 outs recorded, 13 were via strikeout, while allowing only five hits and just a single walk. It was another solid performance from Hernandez, who has seen several of his strong performances go to waste this season. However, on this night he would not let that happen again, earning himself the victory, and “The Stat Line of the Night” for Tuesday, August 10, 2010.

Looking to get back to .500, Hernandez took his team one step closer, pitching a complete game and allowing only two hits while striking out four in a 5-0 victory. Padre batters had no answer for the 23-year-old righty. His strong performance moved his record to 7-3 and earned him honors as “The Stat Line Of The Night” for Tuesday June 16th, 2009.

The Mariners will continue their series in San Diego tonight and look to add another win to their 31-33 record. Seattle was expected to be a contender in the AL West this year, but they have not lived up to expectations. With over half the year still remaining, they will have plenty of opportunities to change that.
