After the Yellow Jackets ruined Virginia Tech’s season with a huge win even superfans couldn’t help win, students gave the university president a lovely gift.

The video above shows why the president has good reason to call for a review of safety procedures. You can skip ahead to about the 2:20 mark to see the students tearing down the goalposts, sawing them into pieces, and then marching down the street to deposit the pieces on the president’s front lawn.

It looks like it was fun for everyone, and as my friend from Canada put it “I wish I had gone to college in the states”. Unfortunately for Georgia Tech it hasn’t had the opportunity to tear down the posts, especially after their brutal loss to Miami, and perhaps the unreadiness of the university security is what led to some of the injuries that were suffered in the mob scene.

If you fast forward to the end, you can hear the president giving a speech on the front lawn imploring the crowd to be safe. Everyone knows the kind of money that football programs bring in, and I’m sure the president is cognizant of that fact. A few torn down goalposts and broken arms are a small price to pay, economically of course.

In their first game of the season, they showed signs that their streak of futility may be over when they defeated what was then a number eighteen ranked Florida State team. Last night they met their next big challenge and it came in the form of a number fourteen ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets team. The same team that has defeated them the previous four meetings, including last season when Tech rushed for 472 yards in a 41-23 blowout.

This time around, “The U” was looking to erase all those bad memories, and they did, not only by putting points on the board, but by putting Yellow Jacket players on their backs, or in some cases, their heads.

The potent Georgia Tech rushing attack was not a factor this time around as they held them to only 95 yards on the ground, and laid some big hits in the process. One came on a 1st-and-10 play with three minutes remaining in the third quarter. Roddy Jones came in motion and took a pitch from Tech quarterback Josh Nesbitt. As he raced for the edge on the left side, Miami defensive back Vaughan Telemaque chopped him down at the knees and sent him somersaulting into the air. Jones would land on his head then continue the rotation onto his back. It was one of many devastating blows laid on what would end up being a banged up Georgia Tech team.

Another one of those crushing hits came from a block delivered by Canes’ Jordan Futch on Tech’s Steven Sylvester during a Travis Benjamin punt return late in the second quarter. That block is likely the hardest we will see this NCAA season and may be the hardest hit next to Georgia Bulldogs’ Rashad Jones anialhation of OSU’s Justin Blackmon.

These are they types of tone setting, game changing plays that the University of Miami became known for during the years of Ray Lewis, Ed Reed and Warren Sapp. It is only three weeks into the 2009 season, but “The U” may have finally regained that swagger, and that could mean trouble for the rest of the ACC and NCAA.

Here is a look at the Vaughan Telemaque hit and Jordan Futch block from last night’s game.

LSU Tigers vs Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Chick-fil-A Bowl Game Preview

In many people’s eyes the best team in the ACC Conference this year was the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, with wins against Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, Miami (Fla) and Georgia. The Jackets really flourished with the option offense, rushing for over 400 yards in their final two games. It really comes down to strength against strength as the LSU Tigers enter the game with the 17th ranked rush defense.

The Tigers did not have a good season overall defensively however, they did not compete well against the elite teams in the SEC. The Tigers youth was evident at the quarterback position, Jarrett Lee and Andrew Hatch did not get it done towards the end of the season. A quarterback that did get the job done was the leader of the triple threat for the Yellow Jackets, Josh Nesbitt, he leads the third ranked rush offense into this one.

Chick-fil-A Bowl Game Prediction

The youth of the Tigers’ quarterbacks may prove to be a big problem in this game, the Georgia Tech defense will most likely send numerous blitz packages their way. Georgia Tech will crowd the line of scrimmage and force Jarrett Lee to beat them with his arm. On the other side of the ball, the Yellow Jackets will need to make some plays through the air as the Tigers will also stuff the line scrimmage and make Nesbitt make some plays through the air.

We have some interesting games now that inter-conference play is well under way, the rivalries are getting more and more intense as the games have more meaning down the stretch.

Our record now sits at 5-7, but following this week we will crack the .500 mark to move to 8-7.

Let take a look at this weeks College Football Free Picks for week 9.

1. Virginia Cavaliers @ Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (-14, O/U 41)

Pick: Virginia Cavaliers +14 – We like the Cavaliers this week against the upstart Yellow Jackets, the Cavaliers are coming off their biggest win of the season beating the Tar Heels in overtime. Georgia Tech is playing some of the best defence in the country, however the Cavaliers have been playing some good football themselves, winners of three straight which includes victories over Maryland, East Carolina and North Carolina. Play the points with the Cavaliers and expect a low scoring game.

2. Georgia Buldogs @ LSU Tigers (-1, O/U 50)

Pick: Under 50 – What were the line makers thinking setting the line so big? Trust me they know what their doing, however, I can’t help but to play the under for the game. both defences have the potential to lock down against any offense in the nation, I will hope they lock down this week. Play the under the it’s way to high for a game of this stature.

3. Michigan State Spartans (-4, O/U 45) @ Michigan Wolverines

Pick: Over 45 - We like the over for this game as these inter-city rivals are always geared up for these games. The coaches also anticipate these games as bragging rights and recruiting within the state of Michigan is always at stake.

Remember to check back next week with out College Football Free Picks.
