While this goal will surely help to relieve some of the pressure on the 32-year-old center, no one will be more relieved than the Montreal Canadiens management, as they should be able to sleep much easier knowing that they are now paying Scott Gomez $7-million/goal, rather than $7-million for no goals.

So now the “Did Scott Gomez score last game” counter is back to day one.  Will it reach day 365 again?  We should have an answer to that by this time next season.

Barcelona looked to be in control at halftime, as they held a 2-0 lead after 45 minutes.  However, Real Madrid would claw their way back, scoring two goals and making things interesting for the fans at Camp Nou down the stretch.  However, they couldn’t get that elusive third goal.  As a result, this Dani Alves strike two minutes into the first half injury time would end up being the goal that put Barcelona through to the next round.

Talk about advancing in style!

During the KHL Skills Competition over the weekend, Buffalo Sabres prospect Vladimir Tarasenko whipped out his stick, a puck and some string, as he wowed the crowd with this incredible move the left the goaltender and many others asking themselves, “how did he do that?”

So what did Owens do to deserve such accolades?  The Coleraine player scored a goal directly from a free kick, not once, but twice!

You’d think the Glenavon keeper would have been ready the second time he saw Owens set up for a corner kick, but that clearly wasn’t the case.  However, he would get some redemption, as he prevented Owens from recording the hat-trick by punching his third corner kick attempt over the crossbar.

Real Madrid would hold on for the 1-0 victory (4-2 aggregate), as they advance to the next round of the tournament, where they will face Barcelona.  The quarter-finals sure does seem early for an El Classico match-up, but who’s complaining?

As for Willy, the saddest part of all is that he had just finished making a number of incredible saves before allowing this back-breaking softie to squeak through his legs.

With the Jets’ defense caught sleeping, Eller was sent in on a break-away before being hauled down from behind with nine minutes remaining in the game.  That caused the officials to signal for a penalty shot, bringing every fan inside the Bell Centre to their feet.

Eller already had his hat-trick, and his team had already built a comfortable lead, but he would not let this opportunity for a four-goal night pass him by, has he executed a brilliant spin-o-rama move that fooled Jets’ goalie Chris Mason and left him with an empty net to slide the puck into.

With four goals and one assist, you’d think Eller would have earned “Stat Line of the Night” honors with ease.  Unfortunately for him, his big performance came on a night when West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith put up seven total touchdowns (six pass, one rush) during a record-breaking performance for his team’s offense at the Sugar Bowl.  However, Eller still does get his very own post following the best game of his career, thanks in large part to this goal, which is also a career-best for the 22-year-old Dane.

It was only the fourth goal ever scored by a keeper in Premier League history, however, replays show that much of the credit should go to the wind, which helped the ball take a crazy bounce and completely fool Bogdan in the process.  Oddly enough, while his entire team celebrated, Howard showed little emotion following his goal.  According to him, it was a sign of respect for his opposing keeper:

“It’s not a nice place to be,” Howard said. “I’ve been there before — a long, long time ago — and that was why I didn’t celebrate.”  [TSN.ca]

Unfortunately for Howard, he and his teammates weren’t able to enjoy the goal to its fullest extent, as Bolton answered with two goals of their own to give them the 2-1 victory.  But that shouldn’t prevent you from enjoying Howard’s 100-yard goal.
