Okay, so perhaps we are the ones who are interrupting the whales, although these two giant humpbacks didn’t allow a female surfer and a couple of kayakers to stop them from bursting out of the water and enjoying a mouth full of anchovies that were in the area feeding on plankton.

Encounters like this one are beginning to become a common occurrence along the California coast, as many experts believe that weather patterns are bringing the giant sea creatures closer to shore. Whale watchers have been advised to stay 100 yards away from the feeding area, but in this case the watchers’ failure to obey such rules nearly resulted in them becoming the meal itself.

Rather than scare him away, the “heart pounding excitement” created by the encounter was enough to motivate the kayaker to jump into the water and get a better view of the friendly blue whale. But as friendly as he may be, it is probably not a good idea to try this on your own. And if you do, be sure to follow the NOAA’s guidelines for whale watching.

Here is a look at the kayaker’s close encounter.

But unlike what we have seen in previous weeks, this time the battle did not take place on the dry lands of the stadium bleachers. Instead, it occurred beyond the outfield fence at AT&T Park, on the wet waters of McCovey Cove.

Following a Pablo Sandoval blast, two kayakers squared off with only the souvenir standing between them. While one of the men decided it would be a good idea to jump into the water to retrieve the ball, the other paddled furiously in the same direction. In the end, the swimmer got the ball, but he would also take a kayak to the head for his troubles. A small price to pay for a souvenir and a spot on the nightly highlight package.

Perhaps this kid is practicing for a trip off the edge of Niagara Falls. Or maybe he was just bored. Whatever the case may be, I think he has just helped us add to our list of hybrid sports. It may not be quite as extreme as some other others we have seen in the past (like show jumping and horse racing, or bobsledding and skateboarding), but kayak diving sure does look like a pain-free good time.

It was seemingly just another day for Robin at Community Boating Inc. on Beacon Hill. that is until she found out Tom Brady and wife Gisele had rented a couple of kayaks for the day. Tom was reportedly racing a friend when his flipped, and that’s when it was time for Robin to come to the rescue. She described her day as follows:

“My friend Jonathan Yasuda and I were out sailing and when we brought the boat back to the mooring and were tying up, one of the guys from Community Boating came over in the motorboat to pick us up. He told us, ‘You’ll never guess who just rented boats from us – Tom and Gisele.’”

“When we got out to them, Tom was in the river and his kayak was upside down and full of water. It was so heavy, he couldn’t turn it over. We asked him, ‘Do you need any help?’ and he said ‘Yeah.’ ” [Boston Herald]

Gisele, who was near by in her own kayak when the incident took place, was talking about how Tom’s kayak was narrower and therefore hard to balance. Way to cover up for the big star quarterback Gisele.

It’s a shame Mark Sanchez wasn’t there in his Baywatch uniform to save Tom. Hopefully the incident doesn’t have any effects on his return to the field.

When they got back to the boathouse, Robin asked Brady if he would take a picture with her. The Patriots’ playcaller told her, “Of course, you guys saved my life.” Maybe they should have asked for a little more. Perhaps a Superbowl ring?
